Charity night slated

Downtown DeLand local charity night will be from 6 to 9 p.m., Dec. 14.

Teddy bear lunch slated

The Guild of the Museum of Florida Art will host its

19th annual Teddy Bear Brunch at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at 600 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand.

By reservation only, Teddy Bear Brunch tickets are $10 per person. Call the museum at (386) 734-4371.

Learn about 'America in Bloom'

Katy Moss Warner. president emeritus of the American Horticultural Society, will discuss America in Bloom from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, in the Volusia County Agricultural Center auditorium, 3100 E. New York Ave., DeLand.

America in Bloom is a not-for-profit organization that encourages towns and cities to beautify their main streets and urban areas with flowers, trees and shrubs. Warner is a board member and city judge for the national group and is the former chief horticulturist for Walt Disney World.

She will offer tips on how homeowners, businesses and cities can improve their landscapes.

Food trucks coming to town

The Food Truck Bazaar will be coming to DeLand's Earl Brown Park from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16.

Enjoy a nighttime, outdoors, community dining atmosphere, sit in your favorite lawn chair, and eat delicious gourmet treats, burgers, BBQ and desserts. There also will be entertainment. Everyone please bring an unwrapped toy or canned goods.

All proceeds will support local families.

Kickball tournament benefits kids

The city of DeLand Parks and Recreation and DeLand Nissan will host a Toys 4 Kicks Kickball Tournament Saturday, Dec. 15, at Sperling Sports Complex in DeLand.

The tournament is open to men and woman with a two game guarantee.

Entry fee per player is a toy valued at $10, toys will be donated to the Chisholm Center.

Aphasia Support Group planned

The Aphasia Support Group is for individuals and families who have difficulty with speech and communication.

The group meets at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, at Florida Hospital DeLand, Classroom C, 701 W. Plymouth Ave.

Potluck planned

The Halifax-St Johns Chapter of the Florida Trail Association will have its annual Christmas pot luck dinner at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Hidden Valley Clubhouse, 91 Valley Drive, DeLeon Springs.

Participants should bring a dish to share.

Flu shots available at health department

The Volusia County Health Department is offering flu vaccines at its health centers in Daytona Beach, DeLand, New Smyrna Beach and Deltona.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people get vaccinated against influenza as soon as the 2012-2013 flu season vaccine becomes available in their community.

The prices are $25 for flu, $45 for high-dose flu zone (65 and older) and $65 for pneumonia. Medicare Part B, non-HMO, is accepted.

Musical at Athens Theatre

"Scrooge! The Musical" continues at the Athens Theatre, featuring a Central Florida cast of more than 45 experienced actors of all ages.

Performances are planned through Dec. 16. Evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. while Saturday and Sunday matinees start at 2:30 p.m. Admission for each performance is $25 for Preferred Seating (row A-E), $20 Adult General Admission, $18 Seniors, $10 Students, and $16 for groups of eight or more.

The Athens Theatre is at 124 N. Florida Avenue, Deland. Parking is free. All Tickets are available online at www.AthensDeland.com, the Elusive Grape located at 133 N. Woodland Blvd in Downtown DeLand or by calling the Box Office at (386) 736-1500. Box Office hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday 1 to 5 p.m. and one hour before live performances.

Caroling planned

Caroling Night in Downtown DeLand will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, on West Indian Avenue, accompanied by snowfall.

Food addicts support group to meet

Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous can help those who suffer from food obsession, overeating, undereating and bulimia. There are no dues, fees or weigh-ins at FA meetings. There are six weekly meetings in Volusia County.

Volusia County Fair & Youth Show reports second best attendance since opening in 1923

The numbers are in, and Volusia County Fair & Youth Show officials are reporting records for the annual event conducted by the nonprofit Volusia County Fair Association.

With a gate of 185,500, the 2012 fair, which was Nov. 1-11 at the Volusia County Fairgrounds, experienced its second best attendance since opening in 1923. Deggeller Attractions, the carnival provider for The Fair, saw a record year on the midway, with gross revenue increasing 6 percent over 2011. Additionally, Livestock sales totaled $167,000 (a 1.8 percent increase over 2011), plus Fair officials report an increase in the number of livestock exhibits and competitive exhibits over 2011.

Additional highlights range from the concert offerings to admission discounts. The Tommy Lawrence Arena saw a full house for Tracy Lawrence on Nov. 3, and the annual food drive in which patrons exchange two canned goods for half-price gate admission collected more than 8,500 pounds of food for Second Harvest Food Bank, bringing the four-year total to more than 12 tons.

No Votran service on Christmas Day or New Year's Day

Votran will not operate bus service Christmas Day, Tuesday, Dec. 25, and New Year's Day, Tuesday, Jan. 1, in the Greater Daytona Beach Area, Southeast and West Volusia County areas.

Votran night service will close two hours early Christmas Eve, at approximately 10 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 24.
