Miniature art comes to art district

Art and Antique Studio and Gallery and the Miniature Artists of America have partnered to bring the best of miniature art to the Eau Gallie Arts district.

The 2012 Art in Miniature exhibit will open Friday, Dec. 7, during the December art walk.

This exhibit will take place for fourth year in a row.

These 6-inch by 6-inch artistic jewels will be on display at the gallery for the public enjoyment until Dec. 31.

The gallery welcomed entries from artists, 18 and older, residing or working in the United States.

Included in this event is The Miniature Artists of America exhibit of 35 pieces of juried works by 35 signature members.

These works have been painted by some of the foremost miniaturists in the United States, England, Canada and South Africa.

Entries in the show vary in subjects and styles and demonstrate fine original art done in small scale.

An award presentation will take place on Friday Dec. 7, at 5 p.m. An open reception will follow from - 5:30-9 p.m.  Refreshments will be served.  The Show is free to the public.

Miniature painting exhibitors needed

The Highland Art & Studio is inviting outside artists to exhibit their work during the First Friday Art Walk, 5-8:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7.

Local artists may come up with four miniature paintings, sizes 10-inch by 10-inch or 12-inch by 12-inch on frame or gallery wrapped.

There is a $25 entry fee. No commission is involved.

Mingle with the artists

Saturday Dec. 7, 6-8 p.m. is the opening reception for "Peace on Earth" at the Indian River Art Gallery.

Admission is free.

Mingle with the artists while enjoying guest artist's work on display for a limited time in the gallery.

There will be live music and refreshments.

Classic fairy tale playing at Surfside

For one night only, at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, the Surfside Youth Players and teacher-director Eva Knowles will present the classic fairy tale "Hansel and Gretel."

The play, the culmination of the Fall 2012 semester, is fun and safe for the youngest audience members.

Cost is $7.

Registration forms will be available for the Spring 2013 semester for students in grades 2-7.

Ornaments from recycled materials offered

On Saturday, Dec. 8, the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary Management & Education Center will be holding an eco-ornament workshop.

Children and their families are invited to attend between 1-3 p.m. to create a special holiday ornament from recycled materials.

With a little creativity and some "garbage," children can create a unique and memorable holiday decoration for the 2012 holiday season.

Also, families are welcome to come early or stay late and enjoy a self-guided hike through scenic trails, listening to the birds' sing their holiday carols.

Auditions available for musical romance

Auditions for "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do," a sweetly comic story about blossoming romances at a Catskills resort in 1960, will be at 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday, Dec. 9 and 10, at the Surfside Playhouse, 301 Ramp Road, Cocoa Beach.

This romantic musical was built around 18 songs from the repertoire of 1960s pop singer Neil Sedaka. The songs include: "Where the Boys Are," "Calendar Girl," "Sweet Sixteen," "Love Will Keep Us Together" and his signature hit "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do."

Theater classes offered

Brevard County South Area Parks and Recreation is offering theater classes at the Viera Regional Community Center, 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way in Viera.

One class will be held either Monday from noon to 1 p.m. or Wednesday from 1-2 p.m.

A second class will be held on Thursday evenings from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

The cost is $5 per child, per class. The recommended age for the class is 10 to15.

Classes will focus on developing acting skills and encouraging creativity and growth. Students will learn the ins-and-outs of acting terminology, rehearsals, auditions and more.

All activities are conducted and supervised by Brevard County Parks and Recreation staff.

Sing barbershop harmony

The Greater Canaveral Chapter of The Barbershop Harmony Society invites all men who like to sing to join them as they prepare to present a program of holiday music at several venues throughout the month of December.

The program will include such holiday favorites as "Silent Night," "O Come All Ye Faithful," "Away in a Manger" and "Jingle Bells."

Rehearsals are from 7-8:15 p.m. every Tuesday in the Choral Room in the Fine Arts Building (No. 4) on the Cocoa Campus of Brevard Community College, 1519 Clearlake Road, Cocoa.
