FRIDAY, DEC. 7

Sharing and tree lighting celebration all day: The city of West Melbourne Recreation Department has announced its Third Annual Season of Sharing and Tree Lighting Celebration, which will be held Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Jan Lieson Cross Roads Park, 2200 Minton Road, (corner of Minton Road and Helen Street), West Melbourne. The bazaar opens at 9 a.m. There will be a picnic lunch with live music at noon. At 5 p.m., there will be holiday music with hors d'oeuvre and seasonal drinks. The tree lighting will be at 6:15 p.m., with final inspirational words at 6:45 p.m.

Like antiques and collectibles: The Brevard Antiques and Collectibles Club will hold its monthly meeting Friday, Dec. 7, at the Suntree/Viera Public Library, 902 Jordan Blass Drive, at 10 a.m. The subject will be "Holiday." The group is open to anyone having an interest in learning about antiques and collectibles.

Miniature art show, presentation and reception: The 2012 art in miniature exhibit will take place during December for the fourth year in a row. These 6-inch by 6-inch artistic jewels will be on display at Art and Antique Studio and Gallery for the public enjoyment. The gallery welcomed entries from artists 18 and older, residing or working in the United States. Each artist could submit up to three works. Included in this event is the Miniature Artists of America exhibit of 35 pieces of juried works by 35 signature members. One of the goals of this organization is to encourage national awareness and understanding of fine art in miniature through this traveling exhibit. An award presentation will take place on Friday Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. An open reception will follow from 5:30-9 p.m. Refreshments will be served. The show is free to the public. Christmas in the park: Lipscomb Park Community Center, 3316 Monroe St., Melbourne, will present a fun filled night of caroling, hayrides, arts and crafts and a chance to meet with Mr. and Mrs. Claus. SATURDAY, DEC. 8

Toys for Tots: Local pilots at the Merritt Island Airport will hold their annual pancake breakfast 8-11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8. Anyone bringing a new, unwrapped toy will be served a breakfast of pancakes, sausage, orange juice and coffee. Toys displayed on a plane in the main hangar at the airport, will be given to the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, Toys for Tots campaign, at 11 a.m. All toys are distributed to local needy kids. The Brevard Aviation Association, Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 724, Space Coast Aviation and the TICO Airport Authority are sponsoring the breakfast. Santa Claws is coming to town: To help kick off the holiday season, Petsmart, 1800 Evans Road, Melbourne, will host pet photos with Santa Claws on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring your pet and have their picture taken with old St. Nick Claws. All pets are welcome. Photos cost $9.95 each with your Petsmart PetPerks card (plus tax). Pet parents will receive a digital picture of their pet in a holiday collector frame. For each photo purchased $5 will go to benefit the Central Brevard Humane Society in Cocoa, to be used to care for the homeless and abused animals of Brevard. Street performers sought for downtown: Melbourne Main Street is seeking street performers for Candlelight Shopping events in downtown Melbourne from 6-9 p.m. Saturdays, Dec. 8, 15 and 22. Buy a Christmas tree to raise funds: There is a Christmas tree fundraiser sale in progress that will benefit the Rockledge Nazarene Academy Preschool. The event is at 651 Barnes Blvd., Rockledge. The Rockledge Church of the Nazarene sponsors the event, but all proceeds go to the Rockledge Nazarene Academy Preschool. The sale is open 1-9 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and closed Sundays. Donations needed for holiday tree: GRAND Parenting Again, a program of Aging Matters in Brevard, is hosting a Grandfamilies Holiday Tree at the Sunflower House for clients this holiday season. This program offers support to grandparents and other relative caregivers, 55 and older, who are faced with the challenge of raising their grandchildren or minor relatives age 18 and younger. Gifts received through the Grandfamilies Holiday Tree will be distributed to grandchildren and grandparents at a holiday party on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 1 p.m. at the Sunflower House in Merritt Square Mall, Merritt Island. TUESDAY, DEC. 11

Memory screen and test offered: The Sunflower House, along with the East Central Florida Memory Disorder Clinic, is offering free memory screenings for adults who are concerned about memory loss. The screening is a 30-minute confidential appointment and includes a 15-minute test. The results will be provided so that individuals can discuss them with their primary care physician. The memory screenings are by appointment, and will be held at the Sunflower House on Tuesday, Dec. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Sunflower House is a senior and caregiver resource center located in the Merritt Square Mall, Merritt Island. Marketplace open at the Port: The Cove Marketplace is in a new temporary location between Baja's and Fishlips on Glen Cheek Drive at Port Canaveral and is open for its third season. Come out and enjoy 20 unique merchants along the waterway overlooking the cruise ships. Enjoy watching the dolphin and manatee's play along the waterfront of the Cove. The Cove is open Tuesday, Wednesday and the first Saturday of each month, 11a.m. to 5 p.m.

Federal employees to bring toys and canned food: The Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, Apollo Chapter 1137, will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, for its Christmas party at Red Lobster, 215 E. Merritt Island Causeway, Merritt Island. Attendees are asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy for children from toddlers to teenagers, as well as canned food for the needy. (Powdered milk and canned meat, but no canned vegetables or soups.) Checks made out to the "Brevard Sharing Center" are also welcome. An evening of fun, food and entertainment: The Oceanside Charter Chapter of the American Business Women's Association has scheduled a social and networking dinner for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, at the Eau Gallie Yacht Club, 100 Datura Drive, Indian Harbour Beach. Networking will begin at 6 p.m., with the dinner at 6:30 p.m. Entertainment will be by Sheryl Olguin and Ali Mata. There will be holiday gift basket raffles and door prizes. WEDNESDAY, DEC. 12

Legislative delegation to meet: Representative Steve Crisafulli, chairman of the Brevard County Legislative Delegation, has announced that the delegation will meet from 2-5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, in the Brevard County Commission Chambers, 2725 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Building C, Viera. The primary purpose of this meeting is to discuss local issues to be presented before the Legislature in 2013. Please note that this is the only scheduled meeting of the delegation prior to the 2013 Legislative Session, which begins March 5. The first portion of the meeting will be limited to presentations by local government entities and those requesting local bill submissions. The second portion of the meeting is for organizations and citizen presentations. Experimental aircraft: The Experimental Aircraft Association, Chapter 724, will meet Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Merritt Island Airport Clubhouse, across from the firehouse at the airport. The speaker this month will be Scott Spratt from the National Weather Service office at Melbourne Airport. Two-day bird count scheduled: The annual Audubon Holiday Bird Count will be Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14 and 15, at the Barrier Island Center, 8385 S. Highway A1A, Melbourne Beach. This 113-year-old tradition is the longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations and to help guide conservation action. Sketches, narration and popular carols at winter show: The Surfside Players will present its annual Christmas and winter show at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 14 and 15, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, at 301 Ramp Road, Cocoa Beach. Admission is free to "Holly Tales," which will feature sketches based on classic short stories and poems, a narration of the classic Nativity story interspersed with popular carols sung by the Greater Canaveral Barber shoppers. Sea turtle class scheduled: The Sea Turtle Preservation Society will present its Turtle 101 Class at the Cocoa Beach Library from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 15, at 550 N. Brevard Ave., Cocoa Beach. This class is open to the public and will cover the following: an overview of the world's sea turtles, including the ones found in Brevard waters; the dangers facing this protected species and what you can do to help; what STPS volunteers do in volunteer activities, such as night-nesting walks, surveys. This is recommended for all volunteers who have not taken the course. Registration will be from 10-10:30 a.m. with the class taking about an hour. City turns into Biblical town: What was the world like when Jesus was born? Did he watch his mother spin wool into thread for clothes? Did he help his father build wooden tools and toys? Was he sent to the market for dates or the apothecary for healing herbs? Now you can learn about the world as Jesus knew it as you travel back in time at the Mims United Methodist Church's "Journey to Bethlehem." On Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 15 and 16, from 1-4 p.m., you will see Mims United Methodist Church transformed into the ancient city of Bethlehem. Outside, you can see the herd animals and help the townspeople stomp grapes for wine and press olives for oil. Inside, you can visit the marketplace shops, and your whole family can learn to weave baskets, throw pottery, play spin the dreidel or sample Biblical foods. Further along the streets, you will pass through the mortuary, the synagogue and the Bedouin village on your way to the stable to see a living nativity. Free family Christmas extravaganza: The House Church of Palm Bay will hold its 2011 Family Christmas Extravaganza from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Max K. Rodes Park in West Melbourne. This free family event will feature live music, puppets, face painting, pony rides, bounce houses, games, concessions, raffles, giveaways and performances by Chagy the Clown. Max K. Rhodes Park is located at 3410 Flanagan Ave., West Melbourne. This event is co-sponsored by Brevard County Parks and Recreation Department, South Area. Spiritual healing/Christmas talk: Practitioner and teacher of Christian Science healing, Suzanne Riedel of Denver, Colo., will present a talk titled "The Real Christmas Message" on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the First Church of Christ, Scientist, 600 Melbourne Ave, Melbourne. The talk will be preceded by a brief musical presentation and a community Christmas carols sing.  The music will begin at 6 p.m., and Ms. Riedel's talk will then follow. Childcare will be provided. Since experiencing an immediate healing of an emergency situation while in college, Ms. Riedel and her husband have relied on spiritual healing to heal everything from broken bones to financial needs and emergencies for both themselves and their five children. Talking Seniors social group meets: Senior Talkers is a discussion and social group for seniors who meet mostly on the third Monday each month unless there is a scheduling conflict. The next meeting will be Monday Dec. 17, at 11:30 a.m. in the Social Hall of Temple Israel, 7350 Lake Andrews Drive, Viera. Attendees should bring a "brown bag" lunch. Dessert and beverages will be supplied. Lunch and socializing time is followed at noon by an hour of open discussions about various current topics of controversial nature, giving stimulation to keep the mind alert. Nurses networking: The Space Coast Faith Community Nurses Network meeting for December will be a double Dutch social event at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at Mimi's Café, 6630 Colonnade Ave., Melbourne. Donations for medical equipment bank needed: The Sunflower House is currently accepting donations for its medical equipment bank. At this time, wheelchairs, walkers with seats, canes and shower chairs are most needed. The medical equipment bank loans equipment to individuals, age 60 and older, and to caregivers of individuals age 60 and older who are in need. Call (321) 452-4341 to make an appointment to donate or pick up equipment. This program is donation-based. The Sunflower House is a senior and caregiver resource center located in the Merritt Square Mall and is a program of Aging Matters in Brevard. The Sunflower House is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Winter camps scheduled at five locations: Brevard County Parks & Recreation will host Winter Break Camp during the holiday break this year. Winter Camp is for children currently in kindergarten through sixth grade (ages 5-12). Camp will be offered at five locations in the south area:

Viera Regional Community Center, 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way, Viera

Max K. Rodes Park, 3410 Flanagan Ave., West Melbourne

Ted Whitlock Community Center, 1951 Malabar Road N.W., Palm Bay

South Beach Community Center, 501 Old Florida Trail, Melbourne Beach

South Mainland Community Center, 3700 Allen Ave., Micco.

The dates for camp are Dec. 21, Dec. 26-28, Dec. 31, Jan. 2-4 and Jan. 7. Activities at Winter Camp include sports, group activities, games and arts and crafts. Registration for all camps is currently underway at each individual camp location. Registration can also be completed at the South Area Parks Operations Office, 1515 Sarno Road, Building A, Melbourne. The fee for each week is $60 per child or $20 per day per child.
