The Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services of the Treasure Coast is in need of hearing aid donations of all types and in any condition.

Many people wonder what to do with their old units that just take up drawer space. Donated units are refurbished and then provided to people in the local community who could not otherwise afford one.

For many sufferers of hearing loss, the purchase of new hearing aids may be cost prohibitive. When that happens, a person must make quality-of-life decisions when faced with price tags ranging from $1,000 to $6,000 for new hearing aids.

Few insurance policies cover hearing aid services. Hearing aids donated to DHHS will be added to the organization's hearing aid bank. The devices can then be refurbished to fit someone who has applied for help and met certain DHHS requirements.

All or a portion of the audiological services are donated to DHHS by a local certified audiologist. Therefore, an adult client will pay as little $500 and the parents of qualifying children pay nothing.

Contact DHHS to find out how to make a tax- deductible donation.

DHHS is a nonprofit organization serving the nearly 90,000 deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in the four county area of Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River and Okeechobee and is a United Way affiliated agency.

For more information on the hearing aid bank call DHHS at (772) 334-2233 or email dsctc@bellsouth.net.
