o Free Santa visits: The Petite Boutiques (formerly the Christmas Cottage), 1002 E. New Haven Ave., Melbourne, is sponsoring free Santa visits from 1-4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Bring your own camera.

Participants are asked to bring at least one non-perishable food item for the less fortunate in the community.

o Burn some calories: The "burn and learn" holiday hike at the Barrier Island Center, 8385 S. Highway A1A, Melbourne Beach, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24. Burn calories and learn about the barrier island's wildflowers on a 2.5-mile hike through a magical maritime forest.

Florida master naturalist Vince Lamb will lead the hike.

Wear/bring closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, water bottle and insect repellant. Binoculars, camera and hand-held magnifiers are optional.

o Christmas ornaments: The Old Town Hall History Center of Melbourne Beach presents Zonta Christmas ornaments.

This is a fundraiser to benefit the Zonta Scholarship Fund, etc.

The exhibit continues on Saturdays until Jan. 5.

These precious ornaments depict historical sites in South Brevard County.

o Job assistance for mature workers: The Brevard Workforce Express mobile Unit will be at One Senior Place, 8085 Spyglass Hill Road, Viera, Monday, Nov. 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The mobile unit features on-board computer stations to assist in searching for job listings, designing a resume and other functions.

o Perform at the mall: Tis the season to be jolly!  Warm up those vocals and put on your dancing shoes because Melbourne Square Mall is seeking a variety of holiday entertainers. All types of choirs, dance troupes, musical acts and more are invited to perform at the mall during the 2012 holiday season.

o Playwright's workshop: The Surfside Players will host a playwright's workshop Nov. 29 through Dec. 2, Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m.

The Surfside Players of Brevard, who discus and develop original one-act plays by Brevard County authors, premieres the plays on Surfside's stage, 300 Ramp Road, Cocoa Beach.

o From California or lived there: The California State Club is comprised of people who have lived in or come from California.

The next get-together will be a luncheon on Saturday, Nov. 30, and instead of a restaurant, this will be a potluck at a clubhouse.

The group will meet at 12:30 p.m. in the Melbourne area. All who come are asked to bring a dish to share. Reservations will be necessary a week before the event.

o Brevard Gator Club offers $4,500 in scholarships: The Brevard County Gator Club, with a donation from the Brevard Tropical Fruit Club, has three $1,500 scholarships available to Brevard high school seniors or Brevard County students presently attending the University of Florida as an undergraduate or graduate student.

Students must be entering the fields or be presently enrolled full time in the fields of agricultural or horticultural studies.

The deadline to apply is Nov. 30.

o Free charity show: Shekinah Productions at St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 2030 N. Highway A1A, Indialantic, presents the "Return of the Christmas Kid," by Joe Lovitt. o Fun life events scheduled: Brevard County Parks and Recreation and Health First present the second annual Run Brevard ReCreate Your Life 5K Race Series beginning Dec. 1.

The series will kick off with the Reindeer dash 5K and Jingle Bell walk and the Brevard health and wellness expo at the Viera Regional Community Center, 2300 Judge Fran Jamieson Way in Viera. The race begins at 8 a.m. with registration from 7-7:45 a.m. The health and wellness expo runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The Run Brevard Race series will include five more races held at various parks throughout southern Brevard County. Participants who pre-register for five of the six races will receive a prize. Pre-registration forms must be received seven days prior to each race.

Pre-registration fees are $14 per runner and $11 per walker. Day-of-race fees cost $18 per runner and $12 per walker.

o Sponsorship, support for furry companions: The Central Brevard Humane Society will host the 10th annual Paws in the Park "Celebrating Friendships With Our Furry Companions That Last a Lifetime" on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Wickham Park Main Pavilion in Melbourne (located on the grounds of Brevard Community College's Melbourne campus on North Wickham Road).

Sponsorship opportunities are available for individuals and businesses at all levels, beginning at $100 for the bronze paws sponsorship and up to $1,000 and above for the primary sponsorship, platinum paws.

This annual features extensive promotion and offers a bang for your buck for sponsors all while having high charitable returns for the homeless animals in the community.

The cost for businesses to be a part of the vendor village at Paws in the Park is $50. All rescue groups may participate at no charge (pending space availability). Vendors and rescue groups must supply their own tables, chairs, promotional materials, display racks and setup staff.

This pet fundraiser will kick-off with a quarter mile "pooch" walk-a-thon around the Wickham Park main pavilion, led by the Paws and Stripes program participants.

The top three walkers with the most pledge dollars will receive a prize and the first 75 walkers with pledges of $20 or more receive a free "Paws in the Park" T-shirt.

All proceeds raised from this event will directly benefit the homeless animals in Brevard County.

o Beach festival: Satellite Beach's Pelican Beach Park, 1525 Highway A1A, Satellite Beach, will be the site for the Ocean Reef Beach Festival Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A combination of food, music, live entertainment, artwork, environmental displays, educational activities and centers will all come together to create a uniqueness never seen before in this area.

Free activities will be provided for all ages focusing on ocean, reef and beach fun such as conservation, surfing, fishing, kayaking, marine art, stand up paddling, sea-beaning and other related topics displayed in revolving educational centers.

o Miniature art show, presentation and reception: The 2012 art in miniature exhibit will take place during December for the fourth year in a row. These 6-inch by 6-inch artistic jewels will be on display at Art and Antique Studio and Gallery for the public enjoyment.

The gallery welcomed entries from artists 18 and older, residing or working in the United States. Each artist could submit up to three works.

Included in this event is the Miniature Artists of America exhibit of 35 pieces of juried works by 35 signature members.

One of the goals of this organization is to encourage national awareness and understanding of fine art in miniature through this traveling exhibit.

An award presentation will take place on Friday Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. An open reception will follow from 5:30-9 p.m. Refreshments will be served. The show is free to the public.

o Center sponsoring fundraising event: The Animal Emergency and Critical Care Center of Brevard is a presenting sponsor for the following upcoming event: Sunday, Dec. 2 in Palm Bay, a 5K fun run is scheduled for both pets and pet parents, focusing on the importance of fighting pet obesity.

The Animal Emergency and Critical Care Center of Brevard, located at the southwest corner of Eau Gallie Blvd. and Croton Road in Melbourne, offers emergency services for pets 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

o Santa Claws is coming to town: To help kick off the holiday season, Petsmart, 1800 Evans Road, Melbourne, will host pet photos with Santa Claws on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring your pet and have their picture taken with old St. Nick Claws. All pets are welcome.

Photos cost $9.95 each with your Petsmart PetPerks card (plus tax). Pet parents will receive a digital picture of their pet in a holiday collector frame.

For each photo purchased $5 will go to benefit the Central Brevard Humane Society in Cocoa, to be used to care for the homeless and abused animals of Brevard.
