Bayamon is the first of three Puerto Rican opponents the Panthers will face in their opening four games of the season.

The second will come in the Hooters of Melbourne Thanksgiving Tournament, hosted at the Clemente Center gym on the FIT campus, as the team faces Puerto Rico - Rio Piedras.

The Panthers will end the four-game home stretch with a match up against Puerto Rico - Mayaguez before heading to Orlando to take on NCAA Division I opponent UCF in an exhibition game.

After another one-game stint at home against DeVry University on Dec. 8, FIT will pack its bags for Las Vegas to participate in the Las Vegas Desert Classic, a two-game stretch against Cameron University and Abilene Christian. The two-day event will begin Dec. 15.

The Crimson and Gray will play its final game of 2012 on Dec. 19 when Iowa Wesleyan College comes to town.

The New Year brings with it the start of conference play. The Panthers will open up the SSC schedule in Miami Shores at Barry on Jan. 2. FIT split the series with the Buccaneers last season.

Three days later, the Panthers will quickly exit conference play for the first of a two-game home-and-home series against Palm Beach Atlantic. PBA will host the Jan. 5 match up before Florida Tech returns the favor on Feb. 6.

The Clemente Center gym will welcome FIT's first conference foe, Rollins, on Jan. 9. The Tars finished last season in fifth in conference play. The Panthers will remain at home for two more games including a marquee match up with Eckerd on Jan. 12. Eckerd ended last season just one game out of first place in the conference.

The month of February is filled with key conference match ups.

'¢ Fine Arts Festival set: A 25-member planning committee is finalizing details for the 16th Annual ArtWorks of Eau Gallie Fine Arts Festival to be held Nov. 17-18 in the Eau Gallie Arts District of Melbourne.

The interactive, open-air event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

This free 'en plein air' festival annually draws an estimated 20,000 attendees, many attracted by the unique event requirement that artists either demonstrate their creative methods or illustrate works in process.

Special prizes are awarded to the artists who most effectively engage and educate the public.

To be chosen to participate in ArtWorks, artists must apply and submit photographs of their work, which must meet juried standards for quality.

Artists compete for $15,000 in prize money, plus the popular patron purchase awards.

This year's Festival judges are Bill Griffith, a ceramic artist and program director for the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tenn., and Linda Schaner, president of Mill Pond Press in Venice, Fl., one of the world's leading art publishers.

An ArtWorks highlight each year is selection of an official festival poster, used to promote the event and also sold as an artistic keepsake, suitable for framing. This year's poster, a charcoal drawing by Melbourne artist Alex Stankiewicz, features the historic Roesch House (circa 1892), located on Highland Avenue. Artwork from past posters also has been reproduced on note cards, available for purchase at the event and in several downtown locations.

ArtWorks is always family oriented, and children's art activities are coordinated by the Foosaner Museum of Art.

Another Festival feature is the exhibit of artwork by students from area high schools and Brevard Community College.

A committee of community volunteers works for months to coordinate the ArtWorks Festival. Additional volunteers are needed throughout the event. The committee also is enlisting event sponsors, and patrons, who commit funds to buy artwork during the Festival. The potential to sell their work helps bring quality artists back each year.

To volunteer, donate or obtain additional information, call the Eau Gallie Arts District office at (321) 574-2737, email info@artworksofeaugallie.org or visit the ArtWorks website at artworksofeaugallie.org.
