Deltona Fire Stations are donation sites for 'Sandy Relief' Efforts

Deltona's firefighters are pitching in to help victims of Hurricane Sandy.

The firefighters were approached by a retired chaplain with the Fire Department of New York, and asked for assistance with contributions, such as coats, sweaters, sweatshirts and other cool weather clothing. Household items - blankets, kitchenware, flatware - are also needed.

Deltona fire stations are drop off points through Friday, Nov. 16, and donations are accepted between the hours of 8 a.m. through 8 p.m. These are the station addresses:

Movie in the park planned

Lake Helen will host its first movie in the park at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Blake Park, Lake Helen.

The film "Hook" starring Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman will be shown.

Admission is free. Donations are welcome.

Donations need for Hurricane Sandy victims

The Jewish Federation is collecting funds for Hurricane Sandy victims.

The federation is a 501c3 tax-deductible organization and all participants will receive a thank you note for contributing.

Anyone who would like to contribute, can mail a check to the Jewish Federation, 470 Andalusia Ave., Ormond Beach, FL 32174 and in the memo column put hurricane relief.

Holiday waste collection schedule for unincorporated areas

There will be no garbage, recycling and yard trash collection for residents of unincorporated Volusia County on Thanksgiving day. The makeup day will be Saturday, Nov. 24.

Unincorporated areas are outside city limits.

There also will be no collection on Christmas and New Years days. Collection days normally scheduled between Dec. 25 and Jan. 4 will be the following day. For instance, Wednesday collections will be on Thursdays.

The Tomoka Landfill and West Volusia Transfer Station will be closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's days.

Kids can receive a postcard from Santa

Santa is making his list and checking it twice at Volusia County's Parks, Recreation and Culture Division.

As part of an annual tradition, recreation employees will send personalized postcards from Santa to children up to age 11.

Parents can have their children added to Santa's mailing list by e-mailing the child's name, address and ZIP code to elves@volusia.org, calling (386) 736-5953 or faxing (386) 943-7012. Requests will be accepted through Dec. 9.

Learn about Medicare

The Council on Aging is conducting seminars to help educate the public about Medicare.

The next seminars will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Deltona Sunshine Senior Center, 980 Lake Shore Drive and 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at First Congregational Church, 259 W. University Ave., Orange City.

Presenters will be Mark Tellier, administrator, Daytona Area Senior Services, and Kathy Kavala, referral development manager. Attendees will receive a handout of changes and will cover the following topics:

'¢Medicare 101 - The Basics of Medicare

'¢What's new for 2013

'¢What traditional Medicare includes

'¢Changes to your health and prescription drug plans

'¢Where to go to obtain help with Medicare (SHINE, etc.)

The event is free and the public is invited, however, seating is limited and advance reservations are suggested.

Deltona kicks off second annual '˜Gift of Food' community drive

The City of Deltona is accepting donations of non-perishable food items. These items will be distributed among a network of organizations in our community to provide for those in need this holiday season.

Lake Helen's first ever turkey shoot will be from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Nov. 16 and 17, at Mitchell Brothers Sport Complex, South end of Orange Avenue, Lake Helen.

Man to Man: Prostate Cancer Support Group

Florida Hospital Fish Memorial will host a Man-to-Man support group for men diagnosed with prostate cancer, at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial, Summit Building, Suite 100, 1061 Medical Center Drive, Orange City. The support group provides a comfortable setting for discussion, education and support throughout the treatment and recovery process.

Man-to-Man is co-sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

The Friends of the Library will host a holiday book and craft sale at the Deltona Regional Library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at 2150 Eustace Ave., Deltona.

Crafters are invited to purchase a table for $25.

Deltona library offers computer classes in English and Spanish

The Deltona Regional Library will offer free computer classes for adults every Wednesday in November.

Upcoming programs include:

'¢Basic Internet in Spanish: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 21.

Youth United Gingerbread House Competition slated

Youth United of Southwest Volusia Habitat for Humanity will conduct its second annual "Homes for the Holiday's" Gingerbread House Competition Friday through Sunday, Dec.7-9, at the Seminole Towne Center Mall in Sanford, during normal mall hours.

Building Permit Applications (entry forms) for children and adults are $15 and must be submitted by Nov. 23. Awards will be given for first place in adult and youth categories, as well as "People's Choice Award."

Sponsorships are available at $25, $50, $100 and $250 levels.

Proceeds from this event will be used for building a home for a low income family in Deltona, Debary, Orange City, Enterprise or Osteen.

Arts and craft fair scheduled
