Let's Get Physical, Brevard!
Participating in races may seem frightening, especially when organizers insist on measuring distances in kilometers and choosing intimidating names for their events, such as "Ironman" or (my most feared) "marathon."
But after participating in several races, I have experienced just the opposite - taking part in these events is fun and invigorating.
No matter your age, shape or ability, you will find similar people all working toward a common goal: to cross that finish line.
So whether you walk, jog or sprint, go out to a race and have fun. And remember to stay hydrated.
Upcoming races in Brevard include:
. A race for veterans: During the Veterans 5K Challenge with Obstacles, participants can run or walk the course while also completing 6 to 8 military-type obstacles, including climbing hay bales and jumping over tires, although overcoming the obstacles is optional.
Event organizers encourage attendees to run individually or organize teams of four people. The event is for participants of all ages, from ages 8 to 108, and everybody should sport their most patriotic costumes.
For current military members and veterans, the cost of the race is $25. For participants ages 8 to 17, the cost of the race is $30 and for adults, the cost of the race is $40. All proceeds benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit that serves military service members who incurred service-connected wounds, injuries or illnesses on or after 9/11, as well as their families.
The Veterans 5K Challenge with Obstacles will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 8 a.m. at Sand Point Park and Cracker Jack's Island in Titusville. A celebratory event will follow the race.

. FSU v. UF Battle in Brevard: It's one of the state's most colorful rivalries; Orange and blue has been clashing against garnet and gold for decades. Now, the battle is breaking in Brevard.
On Nov. 16, the inaugural Brevard Rivalry Run will feature a two-mile run/walk to kick off the week prior to the highly anticipated University of Florida's Gators vs. Florida State University's Seminoles football game on Nov. 24.
Approximately 500 runners and walkers are expected to participate in the family-friendly event. In addition to other acknowledgments, awards will be given to the top male and female competitors.
Prizes will be given to the best-dressed Gator and Seminole participants, so the event organizers suggest that you wear your school's colors proudly and creatively.
The cost of the race is $30.
All proceeds from the event will support the Brevard Gator and Seminole Club's scholarship programs, allowing Brevard County students the opportunity to achieve their academic ambitions at the University of Florida or Florida State University. Additionally, food donations will be collected to benefit Project Hunger, a nonprofit that distributes food to local charitable agencies.
Brevard Rivalry Run will be held on Friday, Nov. 16 at 5:45 p.m. at the Wickham Park BCC Pavilion in Melbourne. A tailgate party will follow the race.
