"House of Wonders" will open Halloween weekend at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct 26, at Daytona Playhouse, 100 Jessamine Blvd. off Halifax Ave., Daytona Beach.
Kate Aspengren's unique peek into the realm of the supernatural offers a Sweetarts treat for Daytona Playhouse audiences.
Ever wonder where writers get their inspiration? Holly (Carrie Mae Holliman), McGlandrey Award winner for Adolescent Fiction and author of a popular mystery series, decides to step away from her comfort zone with a new book based on the life of her deceased great aunt Myrta (Madeleine Borth).
But the dreaded writer's block has settled in.
Not even her lifelong friends Chris (Joey Maxwell), a journalist whose topics focus on strange birthmarks and spotting of long dead celebrities at the local Dairy Queen, and Rachel (Allison Maxwell), who'll "cook an entire meal out of pine cones and moss if the price is right," can get her creative juices flowing again, until Rachel suggests using a Ouija board.
In an unexpected way, Myrta and some carefully selected friends from the other side take Holly on a spirited journey to uncover the "true" story. Ex-husband Eugene (Larrie Tiffany), a couple of Myrta's employees, Cree (Carrie Van Toll) and Garthlene (Nichole Linssens), and Sitka, Alaska, sheriff Jim (Jack Rose) weave a colorful tale of the glamorous madame of Myrta Jane's House of Wonders and the amazing roles they played in her life.
Will the manuscript be resurrected in time to meet the publisher's deadline? Some seriously funny business is being channeled here.
