ST. LUCIE COUNTY -
The Narcotics Overdose Prevention and Education Task Force will host its sixth annual national candlelight vigil at 6:30 p.m. at The Crossing Community Church, 5200 Oleander Ave., Fort Pierce.
"Each year, America loses 28,000 people to drug-induced deaths," said Ken J. Mascara, St. Lucie County sheriff.
"The national epidemic of the abuse of powerful prescription painkillers is felt every day here in St. Lucie County. I urge the people of our community to take a stand by participating in the Oct. 25 vigil and supporting the work of NOPE."
Local community leaders will join together to light candles, bow their heads in a moment of silence and view stories of young people who have died of drug poisoning, many from abusing and misusing prescription pills.
The St. Lucie County vigil is organized by the NOPE Task Force and the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office.
"We are committed to educating people of all ages about the growing destructive forces of drug abuse that have hurt countless communities," said Sheriff Mascara.
