Smyrna Yacht Club Boatoberfest planned
Two weekends of sailing fun are planned for the Smyrna Yacht Club's first Boatoberfest celebration, combining The Precision 15 Challenge on Oct. 13 followed by the Ultimate Michelob Cup downwind pursuit race on Saturday, Oct. 20.
The Precision 15 Challenge
The Yacht Club's fleet of four wing-keel Precision15s will be raced by local Sea Scouts, members of the Halifax Sailing Association, and Smyrna Yacht Club sailors in a series of "round the buoys" races.
Six races during the morning and afternoon of Saturday, will determine which area sailors earn bragging rights to this inaugural challenge. Each club will compete in a total of four races in the round robin. The course will be a triangle on the Intracoastal Waterway across from the Club's Tiki Bar by Mile 847.5 - Green Marker 45. Trophy presentations will be made to the winning club team, as well as an overall trophy for the best skipper.
The Michelob Cup
A long-standing tradition, Smyrna Yacht Club has hosted the Michelob Regatta each October since 1999 attracting between 20 and 30 participating boats from across Central Florida and is a notable feature on the Indian River.
This downwind fun race is sailed between the Smyrna Yacht Club and Mosquito Lagoon on the Intracoastal Waterway and runs a distance of about 10 miles. The direction - either racing north or south - is chosen to create a downwind race, which allows many of the boats to fly their colorful spinnakers. A staggered start is planned so that as many boats as possible will finish the race together - a great spectacle.
