PORT ST. LUCIE - The Port St. Lucie City Council is encouraging local businesses to support a campaign by Workforce Solutions to find employment for 100 U.S. military veterans by Veterans Day.
The effort to employ 100 veterans in 100 days began Aug. 3 and will end Nov. 11. Though at least 50 vets have been hired so far according to Workforce Solutions, there still are more than 5,000 unemployed veterans on the Treasure Coast.
"The Hire 100 Heroes in 100 Days initiative is going well," said Jordan Kahle, a Workforce Solutions employment representative.
"We need to keep the momentum going with the continued support of the employers in the region pledging to hire a veteran."
Workforce Solutions is a private, nonprofit, Florida corporation with a board of directors consisting of private business, economic development and education representatives, community and state agencies and elected officials.
The organization works to show potential employers the benefits of hiring veterans.
Workforce Solutions says veterans learn quickly, have good leadership qualities, a strong sense of pride in their work and are great team members. Another benefit to employers is up to $9,600 in tax credits for hiring a veteran under the Vow to Hire Heroes Act of 2011.
