TREASURE COAST - After a series of layoffs, Sarah Pizarro decided to open her own health care business, Ability Home Care.
Energetic and motivated, the single mom had previous work experience in health care, but knew she had to polish her business skills and create a business plan for her new firm.
Ms. Pizarro found the education and guidance she was looking for through the Indian River State College bachelor's degree program in organizational management.
"The professors were so helpful. Their knowledge base and real experience helped me expand the business," Ms. Pizarro said.
Since graduating with her bachelor's degree, Ability Home Care has grown more than 400 percent. The Wellington resident now employs 45 people offering home health services on the Treasure Coast and in Palm Beach County.
Ms. Pizarro's success has been recognized with the Empact 100 Showcase award for top entrepreneurs in the U.S., under age 30 with revenue of more than $100,000 per year.
Awardees are invited to a recognition ceremony at the White House on Sept. 28.
The IRSC bachelor's of applied degree program in organizational management provides an applied approach to developing business skills and knowledge, connecting learning to real-world experience and culminating in a capstone project for a business or organization.
