PORT ST. LUCIE - St. Lucie County's parks, recreation and facilities department will offer American Red Cross water- safety instructor training at Ravenswood Pool, 400 Ravenswood Lane, beginning Sept. 28.
In order to become a certified water-safety instructor, participants must be at least 16 years old; must pass the pre-course class on Friday, Sept. 28 from 6:15-7:30 p.m.; must pass the fundamentals of instructor training course on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 8 a.m.-noon; and complete the water-safety instructor classes with 100 percent participation. Classes will be held Saturday, Oct. 13 from 1-4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 20 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 21 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 3 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 4 from noon-4 p.m.
Participants should plan on an additional 10 to 12 hours of study at home.
The cost of the course is $225. Participants are responsible for purchasing all class materials. Classes will be limited to no more than eight participants with a minimum of four.
To pass the pre-course class, students must demonstrate a basic understanding of and the ability to perform and swim 25 yards of the following strokes: front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke and 15 yards of butterfly, as well as maintain position on back for one minute in deep water and tread water for one minute.
