School District of Volusia County launches informational website
A new web resource is now available to provide information to Volusia County voters regarding the one mill school tax referendum that will be on the Nov. 6 ballot.
The referendum was placed on the ballot because of a significant loss of revenue since 2007, impacting instructional programs and student achievement.
The projected shortfall for 2013-14 is a minimum of $25 million, or the equivalent of nearly 500 teaching positions.
The site includes an informational flyer; the district's financial status from 2007 to 2013; a list of instructional and extracurricular program eliminations, reductions and changes that have occurred due to loss of revenue since 2007; and a list of reductions in instructional and extra-curricular programs if the one mill tax is not approved by voters.
On the Nov. 6 ballot, voters will be asked to consider a one mill property tax which would be used to support academic programs, retain teachers, and support the arts, athletics and student activities in Volusia's public schools. The tax would be for a period of four years, July 1, 2013 through June 30, 2017, generating approximately $26 million a year. This money would be used to replace the loss of state and federal funds and the current .25 tax millage.
Taxpayers have been paying an additional .25 mill for the past four years, which will expire in June 2013. This makes the additional one mill only .75 mill more that what is being paid now. For a $100,000 home with homestead exemption, the increase amounts to about $5 per month.
