The Shoestring Theatre in Lake Helen opens its season with "Kiss Me Kate" this Friday.
"Kiss Me Kate" is a play within a play, which includes snippets of William Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew." The Broadway production won the first Best Musical Tony Award in 1949.
It contains complicated love stories and a show that must go on (even if it must be at gunpoint). This is all wrapped up in the music of Cole Porter with such songs as "So in Love," "Too Darn Hot," and "Brush Up Your Shakespeare" just to name a few. All 17 of the original songs are present in the revised score, and the song "From This Moment On" comes from Mr. Porter's "Out of This World."
The cast includes: Michael Osowski as Fred; Tori Bunke as Lilli; Braille Babcock as Lois; Lloyd Taylor II as Bill; Tiffany Robbins as Hattie; Robert Rathbun as Paul; Timothy Akers as Baptista; David Santiago and Victor Hernandez are the gangsters. Ray Wood plays General, and an ensemble consists of Frosty Respess, Aladdin Demps, Joelle Gossman, Keenan Babcock, Kristi Collins, Robert Gunn, Shauna Ward, Sydney Lee, and Judson Twitty.
Anne Sollien will be directing with her production team of Jan Wood as stage manager, Ben Beck as music director and choreographer Keelyn Hermansdorfer.
"Half of good directing is casting well and then getting out of their way," Ms. Sollien said. "I strive to create a place where everyone can display those talents and have fun doing it."
A musical is a collaboration of so many talents.
"Having gifted people on the stage crew and technical crew brings a solidity and confidence that makes for a spectacular show on stage," she said. "It is all about teamwork and trust. For me, putting all the pieces together to create a flawless show is my most important job."
"Kiss Me Kate" performances are Sept. 14-16 and 21-23 and 28-30. Evening shows start at 8 p.m., and matinees are at 2:30 p.m.
Tickets are $20 for general seating, $17 for seniors, $15 (for a group of 10 or more) and $8 for students. Season tickets are $70 for six shows "Kiss Me Kate," Sex Please We're Sixty," "Murder at the Howard Johnson's," "Enchanted April," "Breaking Legs" and a children's summer show that is yet to be determined.
The Shoestring Theatre is at 380 S. Goodwin St., Lake Helen.
