Literacy Day event planned
The Friends of DeLeon Springs State Park is sponsoring a Literacy Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15 at 601 Ponce DeLeon Blvd., DeLeon Springs.
The purpose of this "Read Among the Trees" event is to give away free reading material to as many park visitors from pre-reader to adult as possible.
There will be story readings for children, displays and a scavenger hunt to encourage reading as well.

Low-cost pet clinics slated
There will be three low-cost pet shot clinics sponsored by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals rescue on Saturday, Sept. 15.
The first clinic will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at Big Lots 2412 S. Volusia Ave., Orange City.
The second clinic will be from 1 to 3 p.m. at Tractor Supply, 2300 N. Woodland, DeLand.
The third clinic will be from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Pets 4 Less, 2709 S. Woodland, DeLand.
This is a cash only-clinic. Proceeds benefit abandoned animals.

Food drive planned
Weight Watchers is holding its fifth annual Lose for Good Campaign.
The essence of this campaign is to help the less fortunate by donating to the "Share our Strength" and "Action Against Hunger" foundations, which work to help the hungry.
Weight Watchers will match its members' total weight loss nationally, up to $1 million, and donate it to these two beneficiaries. The campaign ends Oct. 20.
There will be two local open houses on Saturday, Sept. 15, where community members may make food donations.
Weight Watchers DeLand will host its open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1697D N. Woodland Blvd., and Weight Watchers in Orange City will host its open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 834 Saxon Blvd.
The local beneficiaries will be The Neighborhood Center of DeLand and Pine Ridge Fellowship in Deltona. Representatives from both of these organizations will be on site during the day's events. Food donations can be dropped off from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is the only day for food donations.

Walk to benefit dogs
ARK Animal Rescue will present "Strut Your Mutt" beginning at 9 a.m. Sept. 15 at ARK's Rescue Center at 441 S Woodland Blvd., DeLand.
In conjunction with the National lifesaving virtual Strut Your Mutt event ARK is hosting a live dog-walking event.
Walkers will begin checking in at 9 a.m. and start walking by 10 a.m. Laps will be counted at a start/stop station. Water will be provided for human and dogs.

Library plans book sale Sept. 14 - 15
The Friends of the Library will have its monthly used-book sale in the DeLand Regional Library auditorium from 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14; and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15.
A pre-sale will be open for viewing at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, and buyers can purchase books at pre-sale prices from 4 to 7:15 p.m.
Hardbacks will be sold for $1 each, large paperbacks for 50 cents, and small paperbacks and magazines for 25 cents.

Children can 'fall into learning' at the DeLand library
Children can choose from a variety of educational and entertainment programs this fall at the DeLand Regional Library, 130 E. Howry Ave.
.Storytimes: 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Children from birth to age 5 are invited to listen to stories, take part in flannel board presentations, enjoy music and watch puppet shows.
.Wigglesize: 3 p.m. Tuesdays. Children ages 3 to 6 can get up and move to the music with Miss Ellen.
.Games for children: 4 p.m. Tuesdays. The library staff will offer a variety of games and fun for children ages 5 to 12.
.Gaming for teens: 4 p.m. Tuesdays. Teens and 'tweens in grades six through 12 can play Wii and PS2 games including Mario Kart, Mario Smash Brothers, Just Dance 3 and New Super Mario Brothers.
.Homeschooling classes: 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays. Homeschoolers can study ancient Egypt in September and October. Registration is required.

Neighborhood Stabilization Program workshop set for Sept. 18
Potential homebuyers can learn about Volusia County's Neighborhood Stabilization Program during a free workshop from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the first-floor training rooms of the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center, 123 W. Indiana Ave., DeLand.
County staff, housing counselors and lenders will be on hand to tell potential homebuyers if they qualify to purchase an NSP home. Light refreshments will be served.
Using more than $7 million in federal stimulus funds, Volusia County has bought and renovated 52 foreclosed homes over the past two years. As soon as the rehabilitation is complete, the homes are listed for sale.
Financial assistance is available to qualified first-time homebuyers.

DeLand library plans adult craft program Sept. 19
Adults can make beaded bookmarks during a free craft class led by Library Associate Charlotte Fey from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the DeLand Regional Library, 130 E. Howry Ave.
