Daytona State to honor past board chair at gala event

The Daytona State College Foundation will honor longtime college supporter Jim Gardner during "An Evening in Tuscany" gala event set for Friday, Sept. 21, at DSC's Hosseini Center, 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach.

Past president of ITT-Community Development Corp. and a former member and chairman of the DSC District Board of Trustees, Mr. Gardner distinguished himself as the original planner and developer of Palm Coast. He also was instrumental with ITT's donation of 100 acres to the college to start the Flagler/Palm Coast campus and with obtaining the funds from ITT for the amphitheater.

"An Evening in Tuscany" begins at 6:30 p.m. with guests enjoying wine tasting and gourmet chef stations featuring European cuisine prepared by award-winning chefs from DSC's Hospitality and Culinary Management program.

Proceeds from the gala will benefit the Daytona State College Foundation, providing funding for student scholarships and campus growth initiatives. Individual seats are priced at $125 and table sponsorships are available.

For more information, visit www.DaytonaState.edu/Foundation, call (386) 506-3110, or email foundation@DaytonaState.edu.

Occupational therapy students 'weigh in' on backpack issues

Students in the Occupational Therapy Assistant program at Daytona State College will "weigh-in" on backpack issues during an annual event to promote the 15 percent rule for maximum weight being carried in a backpack.

This year's event takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, and Thursday, Sept. 20. Occupational Therapy Assistant students will encourage students and visitors to the Daytona Beach campus to have their backpacks, book bags, briefcases and purses weighed; participants will also be weighed to determine if the recommended weight of 15 percent of total body is being exceeded.

Participants may bring backpacks to The Landing (adjacent to ECHO Plaza and Education Hall, Bldg. 200) on the Daytona Beach Campus located at 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd.
