ST. LUCIE COUNTY -

In 2011, the county received State of Good Repair grant funds of $4.5 million from the Federal Transit Administration to purchase 12 replacement buses.

The new, high-tech buses rolled out this month can be seen on all of the six fixed routes in the county, including the Treasure Coast Connector and the Port St. Lucie Trolley.

The local transportation provider, Community Transit, a division of the Council on Aging of St. Lucie, is the recipient of these new vehicles that will ensure the safety and comfort of riders.

"We are happy to be able to have vehicles that reduce the overall cost of operating the fixed route service and provide our customers a clean and comfortable riding experience," said Darrell Drummond, president/CEO at the Council on Aging.

The buses have low 'floor-kneeling' ramps to ease wheelchair access, as well as two wheelchair spaces. They have light-emitting diode destination signs that let riders identify the correct bus for their desired location. Voice announcements also broadcast the destinations and designated stops along the routes.

The Treasure Coast Connector plus buses run Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. taking riders to and from work, school or fun. Passengers can pay the low fare by trip, purchase a day or monthly pass and even get discounts on fares if they are eligible. Gas prices are high and transit is a great alternative.
