NSB library home to novel art exhibition

The children's department at the New Smyrna Beach Regional Library is home to a unique art exhibit depicting the love of reading.

It features the work of 16 young artists who participated in the "Art is ... Creation" summer art camp in New Smyrna Beach. Steering clear of more traditional media such as canvas or paper, the students were asked to take a more novel approach by painting their original artwork directly onto ceiling panels. Once completed, the panels were inserted into the drop ceiling of the children's department.

The exhibition has been a collaborative effort among the library's children's department, the Friends of the New Smyrna Beach Library and Art is ... Creation, a nonprofit organization aimed at benefiting youth and individuals by offering opportunities to have life-changing experiences in and through the arts.

The art will continue with a second series of panels that will be completed by students in the Art is ... Creation after-school art program this fall.

The library is located at 1001 S. Dixie Freeway, New Smyrna Beach.

To learn more about the art exhibit, call (386) 424-2910, Ext. 111.

ACA celebrates Doris Leeper

Atlantic Center for the Arts is celebrating "35 Years: Doris Leeper - Environmentalist/Visionary" with an exhibit that will be open until Nov. 3.

Doris "Doc" Leeper's public identity as an artist often exceeded her work in environmentalism and public arts. Yet the magnitude of her work in preserving the land and developing a social advocacy of the arts is arguably equal to, if not greater than, the output of her paintings and sculptures.

For this exhibition, documents and personal accounts have been uncovered and compiled.

A free founder's day event will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at 1414 Art Center Ave.

For more information, call (386) 427-6975.
