Ongoing karaoke contest benefits homeless animals

The "Karaoke Contest for Critters" is an eight-week-long contest being held at Thirsty Bones, 221 Crockett Blvd., Merritt Island.

It is running now, and will continue through the finals on Oct. 4 to see who is the best karaoke singer in Brevard.

Votes will be tallied by donations made to benefit the Central Brevard Humane Society in Cocoa.

Contestants must be human and 21 or older.

All entries (with their song choice) must be received before 9 p.m. when the contest starts, and only 20 individuals can enter per night.

Winners will be chosen by celebrity judges for vocal quality, stage presence and audience response.

The grand prize is a one-hour recording session to the winner, and there will be great prizes given to two contestants each week who will be competing in the finals on Thursday, Oct. 4.

Pro wrestling at Viera High School

Quality Wrestling Every Single Time Pro Wrestling presents "We're Body Slammin' Breast Cancer with Hope for a Single Mom" fundraiser Saturday, Sept. 8.

Doors open at 11:30 a.m. at Viera High School Gymnasium, 6103 Stadium Parkway, Melbourne.

QWEST Pro will feature professional wrestler Devon Dudley and the best local talent in the state of Florida, as well as former Total Nonstop Action professional wrestler Jesse Neal, in a variety of exhibition matches.

Local business and organizations will be on hand to join in the fight.

Hope for a Single Mom is an affiliate of Brevard County's Breast Friends, a not-for-profit organization raising funds to help support single moms in Brevard who are battling breast cancer.

Financial support is provided to selected recipients as they undergo treatments.

Tax deductible, direct donations for the Hope for a Single Mom fund can be sent to: Breast Friends Organization, a 501 3C group. Mailing address: 1309 S. Babcock St., Melbourne, FL 32901.

Groucho's Comedy Club in Melbourne

Groucho's Melbourne Greyhound Park Club 52 presents comedian Brian Bradley, master of improvisation, actor and comedian, as seen on "Seinfeld," "Amazing Stories" and Broadway.

Health's Angels Heart Ride

The community is invited to the inagural Health's Angels Heart Ride to be held Saturday, Sept. 8.

Riders will start and finish at the Melbourne Auditorium at 625 E. Hibiscus Blvd. in Melbourne, with kickstands up at 9 a.m.

The entry fee is $25 per rider or passenger, with proceeds going to support the American Heart Association.

Riders will receive a continental breakfast donated by G4S Secure Solutions, a lunch donated by Health First and an event T-shirt.

Nana's House music jam at Camp Holly

Nana's House presents a family fun event 2-8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8 at Camp Holly Fish Camp, 6901 U.S. 192, 2.7 miles west of I-95.

Three bands will be performing live.

There will be a corn hole tournament, raffle, barbecue, a bounce house and face painting.

Professional firefighters '9/11 Rememberance Poker Run'

Help support the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation at the Cocoa Beach Professional Firefighters "9/11 Rememberance Poker Run," Sunday, Sept. 9, starting at the Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 10148, 150 Minuteman Causeway, Cocoa Beach, with the last stop at Johnathan's Pub.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. Register early and get breakfast. All bikes leave at 11 a.m.
