Resident author appointed oral history chair

Dianne Marcum, who was recently appointed to the Brevard Historical Commission by District 2 Brevard County Commissioner Chuck Nelson, has been named by that group as chair of its oral history program.

A Cape Canaveral resident, Ms. Marcum is a nonfiction writer who works in print, photography and video and is the author of the popular travel guide, "Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach and Florida's Space Coast."

The Brevard County Historical Commission, chaired by Joe Morgan of Cocoa Beach, is prompted by county ordinance to "collect, arrange, record and preserve historical materials," part of which is accomplished by obtaining oral histories of residents involved with various aspects of the county's past.

The commission, which has converted its 84 oral histories from various media forms into DVDs, is looking at making its collection more accessible to a wider audience; and through a partnership with Space Coast Government TV, would like to interview more local experts.

The DVDs, which cover a wide range of topics from stories of the citrus industry to the space race, are available to be checked out at the Central Brevard Library in Cocoa.

The Brevard Historical Commission is headquartered at the Central Brevard Library in Cocoa and holds its meetings there at 6:15 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month. The public is encouraged to attend.

Call the commission office at (321) 633-1794 if you would like to address the Commission on a specific issue.
