Early Learning Coalition relocating

The Early Learning Coalition of Flagler & Volusia's DeLand office will relocate to 1205 S. Woodland Blvd., Suite 1, DeLand, during the Labor Day weekend and be open for business at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Hours at the new location will be 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The office will be closed for lunch from 1 to 2 p.m. each day and closed on Fridays.

Farmton task force to meet Sept. 5

The Farmton Conservation Management Plan Task Force will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, in the first-floor training rooms of the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center, 123 W. Indiana Ave., DeLand.

The task force will continue drafting the Farmton conservation management plan and reviewing related documents.

The Volusia County Council formed the task force to assist with the development of a conservation management plan based on the requirements of the Farmton Local Plan and to provide a recommendation to the county council.

Legion to hold initiation ceremony

The American Legion post 255 will initiate new members at its Saturday, Sept. 8th meeting, at 2946 Howland Blvd., Deltona.

In addition, the post will hold "Remembering 9-11, Still Serving and Saving Lives" with a blood drive, voter registration, and lunch on the grill, immediately following the meeting.

The event will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Critter's Corner Pub and Grill, 2946 Howland Blvd., Deltona.

Leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma support group to meet

The Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma Support Group will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at Florida Hospital Fish Memorial, 1055 Saxon Blvd., Orange City.

Extension offers lawn and landscape workshop

The University of Florida/Volusia County Extension will offer a Green Industries Best Management Practices Workshop from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Agricultural Center, 3100 E. New York Ave., DeLand.

The workshop is designed to provide training to corporate, governmental, environmental and other training personnel in best management practices for lawns and landscapes. It was developed by the pest control industry and has been endorsed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Participants attending and passing a post-test will receive a certificate of completion and up to two core and two category pesticide continuing education units (CEUs).

Registration is required by Sept. 4 and may be made sending a registration form and $25 check payable to "Volusia County Extension Fund" to Volusia County Extension Service, 3100 E. New York Ave., DeLand, FL 32724. The registration form is available at http://volusia.org/extension/horticulture.htm.The fee includes lunch.

Stetson University to offer political campaign training

Stetson University will host its third annual "Politics 101" conference, a free, one-day crash course on the nuts and bolts of political campaigning from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, in the Stetson Room of the Carlton Union Building.

Politics 101 will feature workshops led by campaign operatives, political scholars and community leaders of varied political stripes. Workshop leaders will, among other things, show participants how to build grassroots campaign organizations, create winning campaign strategies, analyze data to make informed decisions, use social media, and fundraise. In addition, area political organizations and campaigns will be present during a networking fair to provide information about their candidates or causes, and to recruit interns and volunteers.

Registration for Politics 101 is open to everyone, and attendance is free. The conference is non-partisan.

Council on Aging to add services

The Council on Aging of Volusia County is adding housekeeping and handyman to its list of services.

Because the council is a designated Lead Agency by the state, all contractors with the council's Housekeeping and Handyman Services must pass Florida Department of Law Enforcement and FBI background checks.

FPL energizes STEM education in schools

Florida Power & Light Company is supporting STEM (science, technology, energy and mathematics) education in Florida schools for the 2012 - 2013 academic year.

FPL's commitment to STEM education has led the company to develop tools and programs to help schools provide STEM education to students.

Here is a brief overview of the various programs:

This is the fourth year FPL has supported the Energy Teacher Grant Program, which has now awarded more than $122,000 for 120 teacher projects across FPL's 35-county service territory. The awards come from the NextEra Energy Foundation, which is funded by shareholders of FPL's parent company, NextEra Energy Inc.
