The American Red Cross has launched its official hurricane app, putting lifesaving preparedness and safety information in the hands of people who live in, or who visit, hurricane-prone areas.
The app provides instant access to information before, during and after a storm that users can share across their social networks, including an "I'm safe" button that posts a message letting loved ones know that they are out of harm's way.
The new app is free for use on both iPhone and Android platforms.
Features of the app include:
. The one-touch "I'm safe" button to provide calming reassurance to friends and loved ones.
. Location-based National Oceanographic Atmospheric Administration weather alerts to follow and share on social networks.
. Provides remote monitoring of customized weather alerts where family and friends reside.
. Gives locations of open Red Cross shelters.
. Offers simple steps and checklists people can use to create a family emergency plan.
. Provides preloaded content giving instant access to critical action steps, even without mobile connectivity.
. Includes a toolkit with flashlight, strobe light and audible alarm.
The new Red Cross hurricane app is filled with other comprehensive information and capabilities that make it a vital addition to all other available weather alert, breaking news alert or other notification platforms that exist online, creating an invaluable partnership opportunity in preparing local communities heading into the heart of the 2012 hurricane season.

The American Red Cross wants everyone to be ready to respond to emergencies and spread emergency information on social networks; however, it is important to remember that downloading apps is not a substitute for training.
