Volusia County church to host County Council debate
A debate featuring Volusia County Council District 1 and County Council chairman candidates will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at First Baptist Church, DeLeon Springs.
The debate will be followed by a meet and greet.

SunRail public meeting set regarding comprehensive plan amendment
Volusia County staff will conduct a public workshop to provide an overview of the proposed large-scale comprehensive plan amendment to change the future land use designations from urban low intensity and industrial designations to the activity center designation for the area adjacent to the DeLand area SunRail commuter rail station.
The workshop will begin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, in the first-floor training room of the Thomas C. Kelly Administration Center, 123 W. Indiana Ave., DeLand.

Association for Widowed Persons to meet
The Association for Widowed Persons will meet at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, in the fellowship hall of the First Presbyterian Church, 724 N. Woodland Blvd., DeLand.
The doors will open at 2 p.m. All widows and widowers are invited to attend.
This is the annual ice cream social meeting with a musical program.
The after-the-meeting dining at a local restaurant will not be held.

DeLand Regional Library plans book sale
The Friends of the Library will sell hardcover books and paperbacks from 9:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, and 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, in the DeLand Regional Library auditorium.
A pre-sale will be open for viewing at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, and buyers can purchase books at pre-sale prices from 4 to 7:15 p.m.
Hardbacks will be sold for $1 each, large paperbacks for 50 cents, and small paperbacks and magazines for 25 cents.
The DeLand Regional Library, 130 E. Howry Ave., is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Macular Degeneration Support Group to meet
The Cloisters Retirement Community is hosting a Macular Degeneration Support Group at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, in the Cloisters' multipurpose room, 400 E. Howry Ave., DeLand.
The speaker will be Dr. Kenneth Lipsitt, a board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr.Lipsitt will discuss macular degeneration and other vision-threatening entities in his interactive presentation, "Age-Related Macular Degeneration: Hope and Help for the Visually Impaired."
The support group and presentation is free and open to the public.
Light refreshments will be served.
