Volusia County church to host County Council debate

A debate featuring Volusia County Council District 1 and County Council chairman candidates will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, First Baptist Church, DeLeon Springs.

The debate will be followed by a meet and greet.

Learn about invasive

plants and animals

Kelly Gladding, an outreach technician for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, will discuss "Invasive Plants and Animals" at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at DeBary Hall Historic Site, 198 Sunrise Blvd.

She will identify which plants and animals don't belong in Volusia County and why they are a threat to native species.

Her presentation is part of the free Lemonade Lectures series, sponsored by the Enterprise Historical Conservancy and Volusia County. It will be in DeBary Hall's stable, where light refreshments and lemonade will be served.

Low-cost pet clinic

scheduled in Deltona

There will be a lower cost pet shot clinic sponsored by the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animal rescue from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at Auto Zone, 2120 Howland Blvd., Deltona.

This is a cash only clinic for the shots. The clinic is open to everyone, no appointment needed. Proceeds benefit abandoned animals, donations of dry dog and cat food may be brought to these clinics.

computer classes

Deltona Regional Library will hold free classes.

Upcoming classes include:

. Microsoft PowerPoint 2007, Part I: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8. Become acquainted with the basic controls and navigation of this popular presentation program.

. Microsoft PowerPoint 2007, Part II: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15. Continue to explore PowerPoint with a focus on graphics and special effects.

. Microsoft Word 2007 en Espaņol: 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22. Join the librarians for this Spanish-language introduction to Word.

The library is located at the Deltona Regional Library, 2150 Eustace Ave.

National Night Out

event planned

The public is invited to come to Deltona City Hall for National Night Out, an event sponsored by the Volusia County Sheriff's Office and the City of Deltona.

This event takes place from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, and is designed to encourage crime and drug prevention awareness.

There will be events in the city hall courtyard as well as seminars inside city hall.

Skydive jump benefits

Toys for Tots

The Marine Corps League DeLand Detachment No. 1144 will hold its fourth annual skydive challenge for Toys for Tots at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at Skydive DeLand at the DeLand Municipal Airport, 1600 Flightlight Blvd.

The cost to jump is approximately $175 per person.

Celebrate St Ann's

50th Anniversary

St Ann's Catholic Church, 26 Dogwood Trail, DeBary, will celebrate its 50th anniversary with three days of scrapbooking, cardmaking, papercrafts, knitting, crocheting and more from Aug. 9-11.

Hours are 7 to 11 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The cost is $25.

There is lots of table space available, off street parking and the event is handicap accessible.

Door prizes and fundraiser raffles will be held throughout the day.

There is limited enrollment. The event is hosted by Bring Your Own Project

Outfit Outreach

Heart of Christ Christian Church is having an Outfit Outreach from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday Aug. 11, at 1150 W. Rhode Island Ave., Orange City.

There will be free school clothes and school supplies.

Senior potluck planned

Seniors, 50 and older, are invited to a potluck luncheon at noon, Monday, Aug. 13, at the Community United Methodist Church, 41 W. Highbanks Road, DeBary.

The guest speaker will be Mike Galloway, CEO of the Florida Methodist Children's Home, who will talk about the state of the children's home and its future plans.

A short (optional) business meeting follows the programs.

Raffle benefits child

Mainstreet DeLand and the Childhood Cancer Foundation of Volusia County are raffling a 1978 Dodge Lil' Red Express.

Tickets are $2 each, or three for $5.

The winner will be announced on Aug. 18 at DeLand's Hot Summer Nights, and the winner won't need to be present to claim the prize.
