Who's who on the ballot for District 53 State Representative

BREVARD - Five candidates will compete in the upcoming election for state representative of District 53.

Democratic candidates John Paul Alvarez and Edward Lewis Geier, as well as Republican candidates Tres Holton, John Tobia and Trent Laureen will be on the ballot during the Primary elections on Aug. 14.

District 53 encompasses the municipalities of Palm Bay, West Melbourne, Melbourne, Malabar, Grant-Valkaria, Micco, Barefoot Bay, Melbourne Beach and unincorporated areas of Melbourne Beach.

Basic information about the candidates is as follows:

John Paul Alvarez

. Age: 28

In 100 words, explain what makes you the best candidate for state representative of District 53: "Brevard is currently facing a 9.4 percent unemployment rate, and in these tough economic times, we need a representative with diverse experience and proven dedication, and I am that person. I'm the best candidate because I'm an experienced educator and a community leader with small business experience, who will work with legislators from both parties to ensure that we put people first before all decisions in Tallahassee. I will serve the people of District 53 with accountability, transparency and an open-door policy. My platform includes job growth, economic development, education reform, and protecting citizens from unfair taxes and unfair insurance rates."

Edward Lewis Geier

. In 100 words, explain what makes you the best candidate for state representative of District 53: "I have dedicated my life to serving. As a proud member of the United States Army, a council member, the former mayor of Palm Bay, business owner and active board member of many organizations, the words my grandmother shared with me 50 years ago still hold true today. These words are accountability and prioritize. The answers to our economic challenges will not be found by fancy promises or cutting into peoples hard work pensions. They will be accomplished by prioritizing the services and essential day-to-day programs. Needs versus the wants. Common sense versus waste. Fiscal accountability must lead the way."

Tres Holton

In 100 words, explain what makes you the best candidate for state representative of District 53: "I have been blessed with the opportunity to serve as an elected deputy mayor and as a legislative aide in the Florida House and Senate. My wife and I have lived most of our lives in this District, and we share many challenges and understand the issues of our unique community. (Note: Both of my GOP opponents are not current and longtime residents of this District). As a parent, military veteran and business owner, I will champion for better education and healthcare opportunities, support our vets, and will fight against higher taxes, insurance and fees, so the private sector can grow our economy."

John Tobia

In 100 words, explain what makes you the best candidate for state representative of District 53: "The biggest challenge of the Florida Legislature will be dealing with a runaway federal government that does not function. First, the state of Florida must create a comprehensive immigration package that mirrors many of the laws set forth in Arizona. Second, energy independence must be realized by drilling off the coast. Next, the Legislature must weaken the stranglehold of public unions located in our state. Finally, in light of the recent Supreme Court decision, the state must use its sovereign authority to circumvent many of the socialist provisions located in Obamacare."

Laureen Trent

. In 100 words, explain what makes you the best candidate for state representative of District 53: "I have a lifetime of experience with business and community service. I am serious about serving the constituents in District 53 and not just making promises. As a businesswoman in Brevard for 23 years, I understand markets and businesses. I find solutions for difficult problems every day. I am serious about reducing taxes, burdensome regulations and excessive fees that crush businesses and jobs they create. I have a plan for jobs that would designate Florida as one of the six states in the US to bring jobs for UAS (unmanned Ariel Systems). I have been talking about these jobs with the folks of Spaceport USA. Finally, I am a conservative Christian and will always put the needs of my constituents, my county and state first."
