Sixth grade orientation planned
Southwestern Middle School will hold its sixth grade orientation program, called STARTS, from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, Aug. 9 and Friday, Aug. 10, 605 W. New Hamsphire Ave., DeLand.
Students with last names beginning with A to L should attend Thursday. Students with last names beginning with M to Z should attend Friday.
Students should wear comfortable clothes, which meet the Volusia County dress code and bring a school binder, pack of notebook paper and tab dividers.
There will also be a parent orientation meeting in the auditorium. Preliminary schedules, lunch applications, lunch numbers and account information, P.E. shirts and outside locker information will be available. There will be a tour, bus information and teacher meet-and- greet. A concession stand, sponsored by the school's Odyssey of the Mind Team, will be open.

FUTURES Foundation receives match grant funding
The Consortium of Florida Education Foundations, in conjunction with the State of Florida Department of Education recently awarded FUTURES $45,193.52 in matching funds through the School District Education Foundation Matching Grant Program.
Through individual donations and fundraising activities, FUTURES provides support for Volusia County public schools with scholarships for students, dropout prevention programs, grants for the classroom and student and staff recognition. This is the 11th year that FUTURES has received this funding matching dollar for dollar and essentially doubling the number of students the schools are able to serve.
