Dietitian to discuss 'America's favorite foods'
Learn how to get your grocery cart in shape during a free nutrition workshop from 11 a.m. to noon Friday, July 20, at the Deltona Regional Library, 2150 Eustace Ave.
Jill Taufer, a registered dietitian with the University of Florida/Volusia County Extension, will show participants how to make healthier food decisions and offer fruit samples. Topics will include super foods, fast-food health horrors, America's favorite fruits and vegetables, and what Native Americans ate before Europeans arrived. Ms. Taufer will help participants figure out how much sugar they are eating and offer free fruit samples.
The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Deltona Library and Volusia County Public Library system.

Cultural Council meeting canceled
The Cultural Council of Volusia County meeting originally scheduled for July 27 has been canceled.
The next meeting is set for 9 a.m. Friday, Sep. 28, at the Florida Museum for Women Artists in DeLand.
The Cultural Council advises the Volusia County Council on matters relating to cultural arts and is the state-designated local arts agency for the county.

Volunteers needed
Junior Achievement of Volusia County needs volunteers for the upcoming fall semester to teach classes in Volusia elementary, middle and high schools.
Junior Achievement representatives educate students about free enterprise, financial literacy, workforce readiness and entrepreneurship.
Volunteer opportunities are available at three levels and require approximately one-hour per week for five to seven sessions, depending on the program. Trainings are scheduled locally as needed.

Low-cost pet clinics planned
There will be four low cost pet shot clinics sponsored by the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Rescue on Saturday July 21.
The first clinic will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at Big Lots 2412 S. Volusia Ave. Orange City.
The second clinic will be held from 12:30to 2:30 p.m. at Happy Paws Pet Grooming, 11 S. U.S. Highway 17-92, DeBary.
The third clinic will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Tractor Supply 2300 N. Woodland, DeLand.
The fourth clinic will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Pets 4 Less 2709 S. Woodland, DeLand.
Proceeds benefit abandoned animals.
This is a cash only clinic for shots.

Orchid auction planned
The Volusia County Orchid Society will hold its annual orchid auction on Saturday July 21, in the air conditioned Agriculture Center at the Volusia County Fairgrounds, 3100 E. New York Ave., DeLand.
The auction is open to the public and orchid society's members.
Doors open at 8 a.m. The auction will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until all orchids are sold.
Beautiful orchids from commercial growers Susan Fender and Motes and local orchid growers will be auctioned; other orchid related items will be sold. Admission is free.

Surfboard raffle benefits Toys for Tots
The West Volusia Toys for Tots group is holding a surfboard fundraiser.
In 2007, well-know New Smyrna Beach local Erie Peeples, a custom surfboard shaper, created 16 limited edition surfboards to be auctioned for the American Lung Association.
The West Volusia Toys for Tots and the Marine Corps League Detachment 1144 have been given one of these surfboards to raffle off to raise money for the charity.
The board is signed and is No.9 of 16. The logo on the board is retired and was only used on these 16 boards.
Tickets are $5 each and 300 tickets will be sold. The drawing will be Aug. 10. The retail value of the surfboard is $5,000.

College tutors needed for AVID program
College students are needed to tutor in the Advancement Via Individual Determination Program at selected area Volusia County middle and high schools. AVID is an internationally-recognized program designed to help students enroll in a four-year college.
Tutors earn a starting rate of $9.29 per hour for tutoring college-bound students under the direct supervision of an AVID elective teacher during the school day at times scheduled by each school. Rates may be higher depending on qualifications.
Applicants must have completed 48 college semester hours to be eligible to apply. Recent college grads and qualified Volusia County substitute teachers are also encouraged to apply.
The AVID elective class is offered at the following schools within Volusia County: Atlantic High, Campbell Middle, DeLand Middle, Deltona High, Deltona Middle, Galaxy Middle, Heritage Middle, Holly Hill School (middle level only), Mainland High, New Smyrna Beach Middle, Pine Ridge High, River Springs Middle, Southwestern Middle and Taylor Middle-High.
