The International Thespian Society Troupe 1903 of New Smyrna Beach High School qualified for the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln, Neb. June 25-30. Their mask theatre production of Lindsay Price's "Emotional Baggage" was presented for a panel of judges at the Florida State Thespian Festival on March 16, at the Straz Center for the Arts in Tampa. The performance received straight superior ratings and was called "pure poetry" by the judges. The troupe will perform the show and offer a masked theatre workshop to teach other thespians how mask acting is vastly different than "normal" acting. "As far as we have been able to ascertain, we would be the first in our county and our entire District to attend the International Thespian Festival" Director and NSB Drama teacher Mrs. Kendra Blazi said.
The students need to raise $20,000 in order to attend and the NSBHS drama club has announced the following fundraisers and performances:

Performances are schedule in the NSBHS auditorium on May 5, 6, 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. and May 7 and 13 at 2 p.m. The Drama Mamas and Papas, the parent booster organization, will be hosting a raffle after the closing matinee performance of "Alice" on May 13th. "Emotional Baggage is a life-changing experience as it teaches completely different styles of acting and techniques of theatre. Showtimes are 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Admission is free and donations are encouraged.

New Smyrna Beach Middle School will host the 11th Annual Aviation Day Friday, May 4. Sponsored in part by the Grannis Foundation, the events begin with a fly-over by the Gaggle Group from the Spruce Creek Fly-in Community. After the fly-over, community volunteers will make aviation themed presentations to the students across the school campus. Speakers from NASA will be in our auditorium and radio controlled airplane specialists will be demonstrating their expertise on the school fields.
"Many teachers have volunteered to allow speakers in their classrooms for this day to enrich the lives of their students. Our past presenters have made this a memorable event for many of our students, some of whom have gone on to pursue aviation careers" Event Coordinator, Rocky Sorice said.
