MARTIN COUNTY -
Publix and its employees have a long history in supporting United Way of Martin County's annual campaign.
This year, Publix employees from 10 Martin County stores contributed $172,718, which was matched by a $122,400 corporate gift, bringing Publix's total contribution to $295,718, a 10 percent increase from last year.
United Way of Martin County staff visited each local Publix for Publix Appreciation Day to thank employees for their continued support.
"It's encouraging to see that even when times are tough, Publix associates continue to give of themselves knowing their contributions will be put to good use," said Curtis Coulter, manager at Cove Road Publix.
"Agencies supported by United Way of Martin County improve lives. Our contributions will help these agencies and their much-need services," he said.
For the second year in a row, Hutchinson Island Publix Store No. 639 employees gave the biggest contribution, barely edging out Palm City Publix Store No. 1014.
The Publix campaign is consistently successful, carrying on the tradition of giving instilled by the company's founders.
A vital element in the success of the overall campaign is the full-time employee that Publix "loans" to United Way for several weeks each fall. This person helps with several workplace campaigns all along the Treasure Coast, including the Publix stores.
Publix helps with the White Doves holiday project and has provided items in the School Supplies for Students Drive, both projects of United Way's volunteer center, Martin Volunteers. Publix Super Markets Charities also supports CHARACTER COUNTS!, another United Way of Martin County program, with grants and sponsorships.
