Family-owned operations specializes in specific brands

Need help repairing or servicing your outdoor power products? A-1 Tractor & Mower in Melbourne has you covered.

The family-owned business has been operating successfully in Melbourne for 28 years, specializing in specific brands, said Lori Starr, who co-owns the business with her husband, Michael.

"We sell and service outdoor power products, specializing only in Snapper, Stihl, Ferris and Hustler (brand tractors, mowers and equipment)," she said.

The business was founded by Ms. Starr's father, William, in 1981, shortly after he and his wife retired to Florida.

"Mom and Dad just wanted something of their own to do," Ms. Starr said.

But Mr. Blake's decision to start a business resulted in an unexpected benefit to his daughter, when she met her future husband through the store.

"I met Michael through this business," Ms. Starr said. "He was working as a distributor for some of the parts we buy. He started working for my Dad in 1983."

Mr. Blake retired in 2001, and Mr. and Mrs. Starr took over.

A-1 Tractor & Mower sells all types of outdoor power equipment, including self-propelled and riding lawn mowers, weed whackers and leaf blowers. They also stock all the accessories for these machines, including lubricant and Weed Whacker line.

"We know our product and we do take care of the product, repairing it here rather than sending it out (for repairs)," Ms. Starr said. "If you have questions, even as minor as how to wire the line on your trimmer, we can help you with that."

And, as an added bonus, customers can stop by to visit the store's four live-in residents. Four stray cats, who "adopted" the store, reside there full-time. Say hi to Foxy, Goldie, Misty and Bit-Bit when you come in for new equipment, parts or service.
