MARTIN COUNTY - A fleet of about 15 boats is on a mini-vacation trip through international waters.
The group took off from Stuart as part of the latest Flahama Boating Fling, which takes participants to several islands of the Bahamas.
The monthly outings allow camaraderie and companionship for boaters who are afraid to make the trip alone, organizers say.
The group set out on its latest fling at first light on July 16. The excursion is set to last 10 days and take them to several islands, including Grand Bahama, Abaco, Marsh Harbor and Green Turtle Cay.
June's trip, which included a convoy of three boats carrying 18 people, included guided fishing tours in the Bahamas.
Participant Jeffrey Lang and his son, David, reported catching 18 mahi mahi, each weighing between 20 to 25 pounds, in one brief outing.
"It was awesome," said organizer Gary Guertin, summing up the trip. "The Bahamian hospitality was amazing. It couldn't have been better."
Participants snorkel, go sightseeing and attend parties while on the islands. Bahamian tourism officials and businesses offer a host of complimentary services to the Fling boaters.
