MARTIN COUNTY - A plan to ensure that no child is without a gift for Christmas is gaining momentum.
Stuart-based radio station Coast 101.3 FM and Jensen Beach dentist Debra Eddington are spearheading an effort to cheer up hundreds of children.
And these are kids who could really use some cheer, organizers suggest.
"To me that's what Christmas is about," Dr. Eddington said. "It's about giving, not getting."
On Dec. 5 and 6, Coast 101.3 is hosting a toy drive in the hope of collecting enough presents for hundreds of children.
"Everybody has to pitch in," said George "Mr. G" Coles, the station's program director.
It's the eighth time the group has led the annual effort to benefit the Children's Home Society.
And some of the recipients include children entering foster care, a group home or youth shelter for the first time, at the time of the year meant for family togetherness, said Dee Benjamin, development specialist at the Children's Home Society.
Last year, the toy drive collected about 2,700 items, including gift cards and cash for presents for older children and teens in the program.
It's an effort organizers hope to surpass this year, despite a dip in the economy and slipping retail sales.
"We're optimistic," said Deborah Combee, the station's promotions director.
It's an optimism Mr. Coles shares.
"We ask that folks come out and help us make this the biggest toy drive ever," he said.
Station advertising representatives have begun placing toy boxes at businesses across the Treasure Coast for donations of new, unwrapped toys.
But the main events are scheduled for Dec. 5 and 6, when radio personalities and other volunteers will lead day-long events, featuring food and music.
On Dec. 5, they plan a live broadcast from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Dr. Eddington's office at 1930 N.E. Jensen Beach Blvd.
"For me it's really about just being very appreciative of everything in my life," Dr. Eddington said. "I think it's our responsibility as individuals to keep giving back. And we're not just individuals, we're all connected."
For the first time, organizers plan to extend the effort for a second day, broadcasting from the Treasure Coast Square Mall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"Kids love to know that they are getting toys, and they will not be without something on Christmas," Ms. Benjamin said. "These kids want the same thing. They do wish-lists just like any other kids."
