PORT ORANGE - Warner Christian running back/linebacker Caleb King became the first player in school history to commit to a Division I school earlier this week when he said he would sign a football scholarship with the Naval Academy.
King leads the Eagles with 970 yards rushing and 11 touchdowns and also leads the team with 130 tackles, including 14 tackles for loss and six quarterback sacks.
In last week's 64-0 win over Mount Dora Bible, King rushed for 162 yards and two touchdowns while also recovering a pair of fumbles and intercepting a pass.
Warner (7-3) will travel to Jacksonville Arlington
Country Day tonight in the opening round of the Class 1B playoffs.
Atlantic's Queen advances to state
Atlantic High School's Brandon Queen finished fourth overall with a time of 16:32 at the Region 2-2A cross country meet at Andrew Jackson Middle School in Titusville to advance to the state tournament.
He was five seconds off his personal best time. Queen won the district championship last week.
Warner boys headed to state
The Warner Christian boys cross country team punched its ticket to the state tournament with a third-place finish at the Region 2-1A cross country meet at Holy Trinity Academy in Melbourne.
Slater Stich led the way with a second-place finish in 16:37. Daniel Dunn was third (16:50) and Lewis Coleman was fourth (16:53). Coleman, Rigby Coleman and Clint Dunn posted personal-record times.
On the girls' side, Kelsey Dunn advanced to the Class 1A state championship for the fourth straight year.
She finished in 10th overall with a time of 20:22.
Creek's Norton wins two state titles
Spruce Creek senior Matt Norton captured two state championship titles at the Class 3A swimming state championship at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatics Center.
Norton, who will swim for the University of Florida next year, won titles in the 200 IM (1:51.56) and the 500 free with a career-best time for 4:31.66.
With little time to rest after the 500, he led of Creek's 200 free relay with a 50 split time of 21.42.
The time would have easily won a state championship in the individual 50 free.
Creek placed seventh overall in the championship meet.
Kregg Deery recorded a career-best 1:00.88 in the 100 breaststroke to place sixth overall.
Matt Focazio had a career-best 22.17 in the 50 free
for a 12th-place finish.
The relay team of Norton, Deery, Focazio and Devon
Lochte placed third in the 200 free relay and sixth in the 200 medley relay.
On the girls' side, Ashley Miller finished 21st in the
100 free and the 200 free relay team of Miller, Kayla
Derr, Katie Norton and Robyn Venables finished 12th overall.
Hawks win battle of Port Orange
Spruce Creek closed out the 2006 football season with a 31-7 victory over Atlantic in the battle of Port Orange at Municipal Stadium.
Creek quarterback Chase Sofiak completed 9 of 15
passes for 150 yards and also rushed for 47 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown.
Cameron Mai had a 40-yard punt return to set up his own 3-yard touchdown run. Jacob Smith also returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown.
