BREVARD -- The 102 students of the 2014 Summer Youth Band music program, sponsored by the Melbourne Municipal Band, will host a free concert on July 10 at 6 p.m. at the Melbourne Auditorium.
For the past several weeks, the students, who hail from all over the Space Coast, have put in a great deal of effort, learning and perfecting their skills on instruments of their choosing.
"The beginners learned the basics of playing their instrument, how to hold the instrument, the fingerings, the position of the mouth and rudimentary music notation," said Art Martin, executive administrator of the MMB and Swingtime conductor. "The intermediates are being challenged to play a little beyond their skill level."
Mr. Martin said the students have enjoyed the challenge, responding with improved playing.
The July 10 concert, which is part of the MMB's "Not in the Park" picnic concert series, allows audience members to bring a dinner to enjoy, while listening to wonderful music.
Drinks will also be available for sale, with proceeds going to the Summer Youth Band.
"Some of the selections played by the intermediate band for the Summer Youth Band Concert will be 'Imperium,' selections from the 'Wizard of Oz,' highlights from 'Brave,' 'Lassus Trombone' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean,'" Mr. Martin said. "The beginning band will be doing 'Early Bird March,' 'Eagle Summit March' and a couple of other selections yet to be chosen."
Mr. Martin is very excited for this year's Summer Youth Band music program students to perform.
"This class of young musicians shows a wealth of talent," he said. "They encourage one another to learn, but all of our students, from the first class to this one, show the enthusiasm for playing music. They are a pleasure to teach."
In addition to the July 10 concert, the Summer Youth Band will provide preshow entertainment for the Melbourne Municipal Band during its Sept. 17 and 18 concerts.
The 2014 Summer Youth Band music program will host a free concert on Thursday, July 10 at 6 p.m. at the Melbourne Auditorium.
The Melbourne Auditorium is located at 625 E. Hibiscus Blvd., Melbourne.
