This isn't your average boat race.
On May 31, teams will push, pull, paddle, shimmy or even sway their vessel toward the finish line as part of Anything That Floats.
Presented by the MainStreet DeLand Association and the DeLand Area Chamber of Commerce, competitors will rely on creative engineering, teamwork and spirit to bring them victory and glory in their handmade watercrafts. You won't see any engines or motors on these boats. All of them will be powered by human energy.
Race rules also state vessels must not be commercially designed or built.
A Captain's Party will be the night before the race at 6 p.m. Friday, May 30, on West Indiana Avenue in downtown DeLand.
The vessels participating in the race will be on display, giving the public a preview of the fun to come the next day.
The first boat launches at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, from the Lake Beresford Yacht Club, 1961 Hontoon Road, DeLand.
Awards will be given for: first place, second place, third place finishers as well as "Best Decorated" and "Fastest Sinker."
Admission is free for spectators at both events. For more information visit mainstreetdeland.org/anythingthatfloats or call (386) 738-0649.
