PAL summer basketball registration underway

Port Orange PAL is now accepting summer basketball signups for boys and girls ages 8 to 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Port Orange Gymnasium.

Sign up deadline is May 21 and tryouts will be on May 24 at the gym. Participants must be PAL members.

Creek grad grabs rookie of week award

Casey Bell, 18, of Port Orange, a 2013 graduate from Spruce Creek High School now attending

LaGrange College in Georgia, was named USA South Rookie Player of the Week for the week ending April 27.

Mr. Bell played at Spruce Creek from 2010 to 2013, including the Class 8A Florida State Championship team in 2012. He was MVP and defensive player of the year as a senior, on the All Area Team as a junior and received the Team Leadership Award as a sophomore.

Prior to Spruce Creek, he played on several AAU Teams (WAVES and Stingrays) in South Daytona. He was also a member of the South Daytona All Stars that placed third in the Cal Ripken League tournament in 2009.

Lady Renegades High School team wins championship

The Lady Renegades High School team won the championship of the NSA Fastpitch Ormond Beach Bash tournament April 26-27 at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex on Hull Road.

Even with two injured players out and one getting injured during the games, the team won all three games on Saturday.

On Sunday, the High School team won the playoff game against the Port Orange Blazers 5-0 taking them to the championship game.

Senior Morgan Lambert hit a home run in her first at bat in the championship game, leading to a 4 to 1 win behind pitchers Alyssa Sigers and Brooklyn Jimeson.

Executive women golfers begin series

The Daytona Beach Area Chapter of the Executive Women's Golf Association met Sunday, April 27, at The Club at Pelican Bay North Course in Daytona Beach for the first stage of the EWGA 2014 Championship.

The EWGA Championship started in 1995 and has grown to be the largest women's amateur golf competition in the world.

The championship starts with an 18-hole qualifying round at each chapter location.

The EWGA Championship offers two different competitive formats: Stroke Play Competition and Inter-Chapter Team Scramble Competition.

The local winners moving to the semifinals are:

First Flight: Brygitte Lusinski -- Low Gross; Franny Bush -- Low Net

Second Flight: Alice Ward -- Low Gross; Suzette Sweeny -- Low Net

Third Flight: Kathleen McKay -- Low Gross; Jackie Poole -- Low Net

Fourth Flight: Connie Karby -- Low Gross; Joyce Borda -- Low Net

Scramble Team is Helen Kramer, Marty Mulligan, Marilyn O'Connor and Carlene Anthony

The North Florida and Southeast District tournament will be June 14 at The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort, St. Simons Island, Georgia.

Port Orange program competes in national series

Port Orange-based Florida Elite Beach was among the competitors for the first stop of the 2014 National Volleyball League & Rox Beach Volleyball Series.

Playing April 26-27 in front of the Ocean Deck in Daytona Beach, the Volusia County Adult Division winners include:

Women's Third: Kasi Morgan, Daytona Beach Shores, and Danielle Weishaar, Orlando

Women's Fourth: Traci Kennedy, South Daytona, and Brooke Rothrock, New Smyrna Beach

Women's Fifth: Sandy Garner and Susie Williamson, both of Daytona Beach.

Co-ed: First: Nina Krontec and Greg Smith, both of Daytona Beach; Second, Dave Kennedy and Traci Kennedy of South Daytona.

Junior Division winners include:

16U First, Luke Bryan and Anthony Militello, Ormond Beach; Second, Abby Logsdon and Allexis Lanoue, Daytona Beach

12U First, Ava Pringle, Orange City, and Madison Logsdon, Lake Helen; Second, Diana Bierwagon and Kayla Gonzalez, both of DeLand

18U First, Erica Brok and Isabel Harris, both of Ormond Beach; Second, Hannah Runge, Deltona, and Allie Geary of DeLand

USA Gymnastics hosts two events at Ocean Center

Two USA Gymnastics international events will be at the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach through May 11 - the 2014 Junior Pan American Championships and Stars & Stripes Cup.

The Junior Pan Am Championships is the Youth Olympic Games qualifier for both trampoline and rhythmic gymnastics for the Americas.

The Stars & Stripes Cup, May 9-11, is an international invitational competition for trampoline, synchronized trampoline, double mini-trampoline and tumbling. The rhythmic gymnastics competition, slated for May 8-11, is an open event for U.S. gymnasts competing in Junior Olympic Levels 5 and 6.

An all-session ticket is $45 and an all-day pass is $20. All tickets are general admission and include facility fees. Buy tickets at ticketmaster.com or at the Ocean Center box office. The daily all-day passes are available at the box office only.
