INDIALANTIC -- One local organization is hosting a gala this weekend to raise funding for a no-kill animal sanctuary.
The Friends for Animals Sanctuary's "A Night for Paws Dinner and Auction" will be on Saturday, May 3 from 6-10 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Melbourne Oceanfront in Indialantic.
The event will feature raffles, a silent auction, and guest speaker Dr. Jeffrey Godwin from Animal Medical Clinic in Melbourne.
"The Friends for Animals Sanctuary will help rescue, rehabilitate and house many diversified domestic animals, not just cats, dogs and rabbits," said Kathy Bean, a spokeswoman for the organization. "All domestic animals will be welcomed (at the sanctuary), including goats, ferrets (and) gerbils, with the goal to find permanent homes for any that can be adopted."
Raffle baskets at the event will include hotel stays, a Mexican-resort package, jewelry, Total-Wine wine tasting, tickets to Manatees games, Disney tickets and golf packages.
Title sponsor Petco will also donate take-home gift bags for each guest.
Ms. Bean said she is expecting nearly 300 people to attend the event.
Last year's gala raised $13,000.
"We have a very small army of incredibly dedicated volunteers and board members, who work behind the scenes with little credit," Ms. Bean said. "I want to thank all of them. Last year was our first Gala, and I didn't know quite what to expect. It exceeded all of my expectations and was the best gala I've ever attended. Everyone had a great time, enjoyed all the raffle times and silent auctions, and dinner was superb."
Tickets are $50 a person. An open bar will be available from 6-8 p.m.
