CAPE CANAVERAL -- A local car club will celebrate its golden anniversary next weekend, while giving back to the community.
On Saturday, March 1, the Cape Canaveral Region of the Antique Auto Clubs of America will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a "Celebration of Cars -- Antique to Modern" Auto Show at the Wickham Park Pavilion in Melbourne beginning at 11 a.m. This year's auto show will benefit the South Brevard Sharing Center's Children's Summer Services program.
The show is free to the public, while registration for the car show is $20 for car owners. The auto show is open to all car makes and models.
"The Cape Canaveral Region AACA has been hosting its annual 'Celebration of Cars' show since the late 1970s," said Bob Carpenter, show chairman. "Our theme does change each year. Last year, we celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Corvette and, this year, the Ford Mustang is 50 years old."
Saturday's car show will feature youth activities, arts and crafts, auto accessory vendors, music and food and drinks for sale.
"There will be a Kid's Corner for the children, and the Youth Group will be selecting the awards for the club members' cars," Mr. Carpenter said. "The other awards will be the Top 25 Award, the Top 5 Awards for the Mustangs and a Best of Show."
There will also be a special area of the auto show that will feature a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang, with separate categories for the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and older.
Proceeds from this year's car show will benefit a United Way partner agency, the South Brevard Sharing Center's Children's Summer Services program.
"The SBSC's Children's Summer Services program provides food to needy children, who do not receive a free or reduced-priced lunch when school is out," said Tom Druckenmiller, fund developer for the SBSC. "Our food pantry demand increases 100 percent in the summer months, annually."
"The club members would like their contributions to benefit the people of Brevard County," Mr. Carpenter added. "This center helps support the Free Lunch Program in our public elementary schools, and we felt this was a very good way to help."
South Brevard Sharing Center Executive Director Michael Hubler is extremely grateful for the Cape Canaveral Region AACA's support.
"The SBSC's mission is to support, strengthen and empower families to achieve self-sufficiency in Brevard County," he said. "We are honored to have been selected by the Cape Canaveral Region of the AACA to receive proceeds of this event."
With tons of free, family fun, the Celebration of Cars show promises to be a great time for all.
"The public should come to our event to enjoy the many different old cars, some good 1950s, 1960s and 1970s music, good food, arts and crafts vendors and to donate to the South Brevard Sharing Center with canned foods, clothing or monetary donations."
