COCOA -- One local photographer has been named a finalist in an international competition.

"Sunrise Strom," a black-and-white photo by Ed Quillian of Cocoa, was selected as one of the top 104 photographs out of 16,600 submissions in an international competition by Photographer's Forum Magazine.

The photo will be featured in a hardcover book entitled "Best of College and High School Photography 2014," which will be produced by Photographer's Forum Magazine.

"When I received the letter from the contest, I was excited," said Mr. Quillian, who takes classes at Eastern Florida State College. "I knew that I was on the correct track of achieving a dream of mine to become a noted, valued, renowned published artist."

Since an early age, Mr. Quillian has been drawn toward the art of photography.

"I have been taking pictures most of my life, starting as a child, with a Polaroid film camera that was my fathers," he said. "After, I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, late in 1972 in Vietnam, I purchased my first Minolta SLR and learned to process and print black and white film slides. Then, about three years ago, along with my wife, I got back into photography, enrolled in a professional certification in photography program at Eastern Florida State College."

Mr. Quillian said that he likes to focus his work primarily on the beauty of the world that surrounds him.

"I like to capture everyday life images and landscapes," he said. "Through composition and editing techniques, I bring out the details of the image that tells a story. I am drawn to black-and-white photography because of the tonal ranges, texture and quality of light. I am trying to get the viewer into my image and to evoke their emotions and or memories."

Mr. Quillian is a member of the Brevard Cultural Alliance, and has several of his images placed with the "Art in Public Places" program. He is also a member of the Central Brevard Art Association, as well as the Camera Club of Brevard, the Florida Camera Club Council and he and his wife own QCA Photography and Graphic Art Business.
