MARTIN COUNTY -- Bestselling author Mary Higgins Clark, known around the world for her suspense novels, will be at the Lyric Theatre on Feb. 16.

The well-known writer will be talking about her career, her books and will even be answering audience questions.

The afternoon event is a fundraiser for House of Hope in Martin County, an organization that provides meals, help paying bills and assistance with becoming self-sufficient to the people of Martin County.

Connie Bass, a volunteer at House of Hope and one of three chairmen for the event, invited Clark to participate. Bass has kept in touch with Clark since they met on a cruise some 15 years ago where the writer was lecturing and believed she would be inclined to join the cause.

"She's very philanthropically inclined," said Ms. Bass. "If you don't ask, all people can say is no."

Ms. Clark agreed to come to Stuart for the conversation at no charge when Bass told her about all that House of Hope does for the community.

"Since 1984 House of Hope has offered help and hope to the people of Martin County who are experiencing hard times," Bass said.

The organization will receive 100 percent of the proceeds from the event and 34 lucky high school students from around Martin County will get to attend a meet and greet with Ms. Clark beforehand thanks to the Education Foundation of Martin County.

Ms. Bass thought it was a great way to raise money for House of Hope, different than the galas and luncheons that many other organizations put on. She was glad to discover that Ms. Clark and John Lesser, Lyric Theatre executive director were on board with the idea.

"It's a win-win for everyone," Ms. Bass said.

There are still a handful of tickets available for the Conversation with Mary Higgins Clark and Ms. Bass believes the evening with the woman she says possesses the "gift of gab" will be a delight.

The Conversation takes place at the Lyric Theatre in Stuart on Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $50 and can be purchased by calling the Lyric Theatre box office at (772) 286-7827 or online at www.lyrictheatre.com
