MERRITT ISLAND -- While today's economic forecast is still dismal, two groups have come together to make sure people and their pets receive the food they need.
On Friday, Feb. 7, Grace United Methodist Church and the SPCA of Brevard will host a pet food drive for Brevard County families in need.
Donations will be accepted at either the SPCA Thrift Story or Grace United Methodist Church. All donations will then be passed out to families on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Grace Saturday Country Store at GUMC from 9 a.m. to noon.
Many pet owners along the Space Coast struggle to make ends meet; the struggles they face sadly cause them to sometimes be unable to purchase their pet's food, said Susan Naylor, media specialist for the SPCA of North Brevard.
"We have partnered with GUMC several times a year since July 2012 to help needy families keep their pets by hosting pet food drives," Ms. Naylor said.
Coordinators of this weekend's pet food drive are requesting donations of dog and cat food, preferably dry, to distribute to families in need.
"Any brand will be great since there are many families, which all use various brands for their pets," Ms. Naylor said.
Ms. Naylor added that many families, who will receive the donated pet food, are already in the church's system for the food bank.
"But a lot of families also show up, and the church distributes all the items until the supplies run out," she added.
