Sculptor receives award for St. Augustine foot soldiers monument

On Jan. 13, the Portrait Society of America awarded sculptor Brian R. Owens "First Merit" in its 2013 Members Only Competition (within the category of Commissioned Portrait Sculpture) for a bronze bust entitled "Subject

No. 2". This is the second bust from the left in the St. Augustine Foot Soldiers

Monument.

The Portrait Society of America, a national organization with about 3,000 members, selected

five "place winners," five "merit winners" and five "honorable mentions" within this category.

There were other categories and a total of 804 entries. Mr. Owens has been a member for about eight years.

The St. Augustine Foot Soldiers Monument honors men and women who engaged in various forms of peaceful protest to advance the cause of civil rights in the city of St. Augustine

during the early 1960s, many at great personal cost. They are largely anonymous but are credited with having helped create the pressure needed to end a filibuster and pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
