Endurance race hits the track this weekend

The 52nd anniversary of the Rolex 24 at Daytona, the debut event for the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship, will start at 2:10 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25.

Other schedule highlights include the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge race on Friday, Jan. 24, at 1:45 p.m. and a pair of IMSA Ferrari Challenge races on Friday, Jan. 24, at 10:30 a.m. and Saturday, Jan. 25, at 9:35 a.m.

The TUDOR Championship is the result of the merger of the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series and the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patr-n.

NASCAR honors late ISC safety executive

Ernie Thurston, the corporate coordinator of Track Safety & Emergency Services for International Speedway Corp., was posthumously honored by NASCAR with the Jim Bockoven Lifetime Achievement Award.  

The award was presented at NASCAR's annual

Track Services and Security Summit in Charlotte. Mr. Thurston, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, was a long time civil servant having worked for the Schuyler County, N.Y., Sheriff's Department and the Watkins Glen, N.Y. Fire Department.  He joined ISC in 1989 while working for Watkins Glen International and later moved to the company's headquarters in Daytona Beach.

Most recently, Mr. Thurston was responsible for coordinating safety and emergency services for all of ISC's business units nationwide. He passed away in November.

The Jim Bockoven Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes the contributions of an individual made to the improvement of track services over the course of a career spanning 10 years or more.

Lady Renegades' fast-pitch softball tryouts for 8u will be at 10 a.m. Feb. 1 at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex, 700 Hull Road, Ormond Beach.

Monthly junior tennis play day set at Victoria Park

KC Tennis Academy is hosting its monthly Junior Play Day at Victoria Commons tennis courts.

Play Days are designed for kids of all ages and allow them to play multiple matches in a non-elimination setting -- all with the goal of enhancing skills and making friends in a fun, social atmosphere.

January's Junior Play Day will be Saturday, Feb. 1, at 550 Brookfield Terrace, DeLand.

Times are:

Boys/Girls 8 & under, 10-11:30 a.m.

Boys/Girls 10 & under 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

Boys/Girls 12 & under 3-5 p.m.

Boys/Girls 16 & under 3-5 p.m.

Early registration ends Jan. 29 and the fee is $20. Registration is available at the event for a fee of $25 per participant. No experience is necessary

Monthly adult doubles round robin scheduled

KC Tennis Academy is hosting its monthly Adult Doubles Round Robin sessions from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb.1, at the Victoria Commons tennis courts, 550 Brookfield Terrace, DeLand.

Food will be provided and prizes handed out.

Early Registration ends at 5 p.m. Jan. 29.

For residents of Victoria Park, pre-registration fee is $12 and non-residents fee is $15.

Register at the door for a fee of $15 for residents and $18 for non-residents.

Babe Ruth Baseball registration begun

The City of South Daytona is registering youth ages 4 to 15 years for its spring Babe Ruth Baseball season. Registration is at the Piggotte Community Center, 504 Big Tree Road, South Daytona.

The deadline to register is Monday, Feb. 3. Tryouts begin Feb. 3 and the games begin in March.

The cost is $60 for T-ball, $70 for pitching machine, minors and majors, and $75 for juniors. There is a $10 non-resident fee for those not residing in South Daytona.
