David A. Freer has been selected as the 2014 recipient of the Herbert M. Davidson Memorial Award for Outstanding Community Service by the Community Foundation of Volusia & Flagler.

Mr. Freer has a distinguished record as the Charter Chairman of Daytona International Speedway's "Checkered Flag Committee" when it was established in 1972, and served in that capacity for 23 years. He performed most of these duties while employed full-time as president of Atlantic Bank of Daytona Beach.

Mr. Freer's career in banking spans 42 years. He has served as branch manager, executive vice president, and president of banks and financial institutions in Central Florida since 1947. Prior to his employment in the banking industry, Mr. Freer served a tour of duty in the U.S. Navy that began with shipboard service during the final months of World War II.

Mr. Freer is being recognized for his many contributions to community volunteerism. Under his stewardship, the Checkered Flag Committee grew and developed into a much-appreciated corps of volunteers, consisting of local professionals willing to sacrifice their time to serve as special ambassadors during the racing season and its affiliated events. He developed the behind-the-scenes groundwork that helped present a friendly face on behalf of the racing community to a national and international fan base.

Mr. Freer has also served as chairman of the Daytona Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and received the Lou Fuchs Award for leadership in 2000. He also has been involved with the Red Cross, the YMCA, the Daytona Beach Racing and Recreational Facilities District and the LPGA.

The award ceremony will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at the Daytona 500 Club of Daytona International Speedway.
