Toni & Joe's: On the ocean and on the mark

A New Smyrna Beach restaurant is one of the dwindling numbers of ones right on the beach that offer a full breakfast menu. Toni and Joe's Patio not only offers a variety of choices for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but they also provide a great view of the ocean from nearly every seat in the restaurant.

The breakfast menu includes bacon or sausage, cheese and eggs on a roll, breakfast burritos, shrimp omelets, pancakes, home fries or grits and a variety of muffins. There is even a gluten-free option of Millet Zucchini Toast with butter, jam or honey. Prices for breakfast range from $1.75 up to $7.25 for the NSB SLAM that includes 2 eggs, bacon, sausage, pancake and home fries or grits. Breakfast is served 8 to 11 a.m. every day.

For lunch or dinner, the restaurant offers a variety of hoagies, seafood, burgers or pizza. Named for the original owners, Toni and Joe's Patio is known locally for the famous Steak Hoagie, which has been a staple since it opened in 1958.

The business is family- owned, started by Beverly Granieri Hesson's parents when she was just a child after they moved to New Smyrna Beach from Pennsylvania. She and her brothers grew up working in the restaurant, which was on Flagler Avenue at the Sea Fox.

Operated by Ms. Hesson and her brother, Joe Granieri, Toni and Joe's Patio has great food at great prices as well as a bar that includes soft drinks, a variety of bottled beer starting at $4, cocktails starting at $4.75 and chilled wine starting at $6.

The hoagies are made fresh to order on sub rolls that are baked fresh by a local supplier and delivered daily.

"We are best known for our Steak Hoagie," Ms. Hesson said, "but people also really love our steamed clams or mussels done in our special garlic and herb sauce."

Other seafood options include grilled Mahi-Mahi or spicy shrimp, steamed shrimp with Old Bay or cocktail sauce and a Cajun shrimp skewer for those with a taste for spicier seafood. The Seafood Special includes grilled Mahi-Mahi, Cajun shrimp, steamed mussels or clams and hot bread, all for just $26.95 plus tax.

Toni and Joe's Patio is right on the beach just off Flagler Avenue at 309 Buenos Aires Ave. in New Smyrna Beach. They have a patio on the waterfront with covered tables and an area for live entertainment. The building was constructed by Ms. Hesson's father, Joe, who worked in construction during the day and operated the restaurant in the evenings.

During the summer there are bands playing in the afternoons most days, weather permitting, but during the winter the bands normally play only on the weekends. Currently they feature a steel drum band, "Five Island Steel" on Friday and Saturday afternoons.

Other entertainment is offered during the monthly Full Moon Parties. Every month on the night of the official full moon local jazz artist Linda Cole sings. She also is featured during Flagler Avenue's monthly Wine Walk that normally occurs on the Fourth Saturday of each month. Toni and Joe's Patio is a regular stop on the tour.

Just last year, according to Ms. Hesson, they started accepting credit cards with a $10 minimum purchase. "We used to be a cash only establishment, but it is nice to be in the 21st century now," Ms. Hesson exclaimed.

The restaurant is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. seven days a week.

"We stay open longer in the summer," Ms. Hesson said, "as long as we have a good group of people here, we can stay open a little later."
