BREVARD -- Two of Brevard's elite musical groups will come together for a spectacular performance this weekend.
On Sunday, Dec. 8, the Space Coast Flute Orchestra and the Indialantic Chamber Singers will present the 12th annual "Flutes & Voices of Christmas" concerts. The first performance will be hosted at Suntree United Methodist Church at 2 p.m., with the second concert hosted at Eastminster Presbyterian Church in Indialantic at 4:30 p.m.
Both performances are free to the public, with donations gratefully accepted.
What began as an idea 12 years ago between Nancy Clew, conductor for the Space Coast Flute Orchestra, and David Vogeding, director and founder of the Indialantic Chamber Singers, "Flutes & Voices of Christmas" has become one of the most popular holiday events on the Space Coast.
"With both the Indialantic Chamber Singer and the Space Coast Flute Orchestra performing, it became necessary to have two venues to accommodate the crowds," said Tony Spadafora, president of the Indialantic Chamber Singers. "A good problem to have!"
"We could not seat all of the people who came when we only had one concert," added Mrs. Clew.
Sunday's performances will include seasonal works by the SCFO, such as "Alleluja, Exultate Jubilate," by Mozart, the "Miniature Overture to the Nutcracker" by Tchaikovsky and much more. The Indialantic Chamber Singers will perform elegant European carols, as well as newer works, and will join the SCFO in "Masters in the Hall," "Ding Dong," "Winter Wonderland" and "I Wish You Christmas" by John Rutter.
"'Masters in the Hall' is always a favorite of mine, and this year, we will be performing it together with the Flute Orchestra," Mr. Spadafora said. "We will perform a Bach Choral, 'BWV No. 140' again, and who can resist the wonderful strains of 'Ding Dong Merrily on High'?"
Audience members at both performances will have a chance to be a part of the concert, singing along to Christmas carols such as "Joy to the World," "Adeste Fidelus" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas."
"I think these concerts will inspire people to join in the blessing of the season, with good will for all, as well as hear the combined ensembles," Mrs. Clew said of Sunday's concerts. "There is no place in the country that offers this combination of two large ensembles."
Mr. Spadafora mirrors Mrs. Clew's excitement for Sunday's collaboration.
"I personally don't know of anywhere else one could go to hear both flute and voices performing together," he said. "Then, add in the fact that it's a free concert -- there is no better way to start off the holiday season than coming out to hear us."
