BREVARD -- With the holiday season officially arriving on the Space Coast, residents will have the opportunity to explore many wonderful things the area has to offer, in between holiday shopping.
On Saturday, Dec. 7, the Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science will host its Community Free Day, with free admission to the museum, as well as tons of exciting activities.
"This is our second year of hosting a Community Free Day the first Saturday of December," said Rachel Burris, assistant director and director of education. "An event that is free is always good around the holidays, and having a 'Free Day' helps people see what a wonderful resource the museum is."
Beginning at 11:30 a.m. "Safari Todd" will be at the museum all day with special hands-on presentations.
"Safari Todd brings with him an assortment of snakes, scorpions, alligators and spiders," Mrs. Burris said. "All animals are able to be held, with proper guidance. Safari Todd talks about each animal -- their life in the wild, proper care and handling and much more."
In addition to Safari Todd's thrilling presentation, local author Jaimie Engle will host a book signing for her new book, "Clifton Chase and the Arrow of Light," which is a wonderful historic fiction read for children. Ms. Engle will also speak about the writing process.
"We've added another layer this year with local writer Jaimie Engle, who writes historical fiction," Mrs. Burris said. "The museum is the perfect place for Jaimie to do both a book reading and signing."
Attendees to the Brevard Museum's Community Free Day will also have the opportunity to bid on a decorated holiday tree.
"The Brevard Museum Guild is decorating the tree, with a Florida theme," Mrs. Burris added. "It's covered with shells galore and a few other items you might find in Florida."
Those interested in bidding on the tree will have the opportunity to do so until Dec. 7 at 3 p.m., just prior to when the lucky winner will be announced.
There will also be a special food cart outside the Brevard Museum, selling hot dogs and cold drinks, with proceeds benefitting the SPCA of Brevard and the Brevard Museum.
"People should attend the Community Free Day for a chance to view the museum's exhibits, while also participating in unique activities of the day," Mrs. Burris said. "For those, who haven't been out to see 'Bones' the mastodon yet, it is definitely worth making the trip. The museum is here for the community, and we want the community to be a part of the museum."
The Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science will host its Community Free Day on Saturday, Dec. 7.
The Brevard Museum is located at 2201 Michigan Ave., Cocoa.
