COCOA BEACH -- As the Space Program reached fever pitch, a new church was just beginning its mission of serving the local community.
Today, Lutheran Church of the Resurrection is celebrating 50 years in Cocoa Beach. To honor this tremendous event, the church will host a free, family-friendly event on Saturday, Nov. 9 from noon until 3 p.m., complete with food, prizes, games and live music.
"The first pastor of Resurrection went door-to-door to invite residents to the newly formed Lutheran congregation, founded on the love and grace-filled teachings of Jesus Christ," said Pastor Jay Bergstresser, current pastor of Lutheran Church of the Resurrection. "Slowly the congregation grew -- as did the space program in Cocoa Beach."
In its 50 years, Lutheran Church of the Resurrection has hosted many weekly worship services, as well as community outreach projects.
"We have also discovered the vitality of reaching out in Christ's name to the needy," Pastor Bergstresser added. "We have a food pantry that is open four times each month, which offers nonperishable food, as well as fresh vegetables from our pantry garden."
A congregation focused on service, Pastor Bergstresser, who has served as pastor for Lutheran Church of the Resurrection for nearly 18 years, said that the pantry also provides counseling, job training in conjunction with Goodwill Industries, Veteran assistance, and street outreach twice a month to the homeless in Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral.
Mary Silverstein, church member and event coordinator, said that Saturday's celebration is sure to be a major crowd-pleaser.
"Outside, there will be a bean bag toss, chicken-in-a-basket game, a bounce house, petting zoo and face painting," Mrs. Silverstein said. "Inside the Ministry Center, there will be crafts, a giant jigsaw puzzle to help assemble, guessing games and a Cocoa Beach Trivia contest."
Attendees will also have the opportunity to walk away with some awesome prizes, including gift certificates from local businesses, crystal giftware, silk floral arrangements and much more.
"This will be a free, family-centered event, with something for the whole family to enjoy," Mrs. Silverstein said. "Families will be able to spend the afternoon together, listening to good music, playing some games and enjoying snacks, all for free."
Lutheran Church of the Resurrection will host its 50th anniversary on Saturday, Nov. 9 from noon until 3 p.m. This is a free, family-friendly event.
